I like the idea of there being some sort of investment required for voting. Everybody interested in voting can, but there's a barrier to entry that helps people be informed voters or at least passionate about voting. However, like you, I fi

I've tried using Tramp several times over the past few years on multiple operating systems and environments. However, it has always been unbearably slow for me, even with persistent SSH connections via ControlMaster/ControlPath. Any pointer

I use slicehost for their VPS, but they have a nice restful API for their DNS servers in addition to a web interface. Their cheapest VPS is $20/month, so with that you could get your DNS.

Are there any good videos online for learning the statistics behind R? Most of the R videos I've seen have been focused on the tool, not the statistics behind the tool.

Twitter can definitely be a waste of time. However, there's often some gems of information in the midst of it all. My twitter strategy as of late has been to catch up on tweets while sitting on the toilet. The iPhone helps with this endeavo

I think the catch with macroeconomics is that anybody can come by after the fact and provide an explanation for why things happened the way they did. Many of the explanations are not falsifiable, and two competing explanations might both so

Conversation view in Mail.app is nice, but it really only threads the messages in your inbox (or current folder). Gmail's threads are a bit nicer since it'll grab all the related messages even if they've already been archived.

I think it's time for a new email protocol. IMAP is far too slow and lacks tagging. POP doesn't synchronize read/unread status (or anything else). There's an interesting opportunity here for building a web service on top of email that would

I'm really looking forward to reading the first reviews of the Foxit eSlick ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/ebook/ ). If it works well with Pragmatic Programmer PDF's, I'm grabbing it.

To clarify, the idea is not to create a new Emacs or even a text editor. Rather, the idea comes from noticing that one of the redeeming qualities of Emacs is how it provides a framework for keyboard-focused applications. If there's a demand
