Get computer. Play with it a bit. Get book on programming in X. Write code. Books, and reading them and doing, are the only way of learning how to be a software developer.

I quite like "pair debugging". As someone that doesn't really like using a debugger, it's good to have someone that does use it to go through code (possibly not mine) with me commenting or suggesting problems. Probably i

To quibble a little Gaea is not fully biological. For instance, at one point a particle accelerator is mentioned as being in the ship's shell, and both the original (well, latest) Gaea entity and later Gaby are obviously running on som

"I f*cked up" is something I've had to say several times in my career as a dev. It's in the nature of things.

If IBM had given OS/2 to their mainframe division to develop (and hired someone to design a better GUI, with much better icons - these things matter), I think it could have been a hit. I was using hypervisor stuff on VM/CMS in the

I wouldn't be shocked at all. In the 90s I consulted for a couple of UK firms that used OS/2 - a training company I worked for used a (nightmarish) C++ compiler that only ran, very badly, on it. And I trained several batches of VM

Well, good luck. But how many copies of OS/2 Warp do you think were ever sold in Slovenia? Heck, there were not many sold in English speaking regions! Perhaps a more interesting question would be: "how do I create a localisation C

I think there is a bit wrong with this, IMHO: “only I can do” Sorry, friends, but this is incorrect. No, not incorrect - if you have the vision for a FOSS project then you are probably the only one that can steer it. That's not to say

Clarity? And in C++ at least, I would re-write the functions.

Doesn't the name of the function select for the types and use of the parameters? But I haven't written in C for a long time, and this I think could be done more clearly in C++.

Purely out of interest, and probably my bad, but what is: (void)k_sz; doing? I've seen fussy people doing: (void) printf( "hello" ); but not what you have written. As I say, probably ignorance on my part.

Like much of what i wrote before the days of distributed version control, this is now lost in the mists of time. And the code wouldn't belong to me anyway.

Don't know about the biggest, although it was quite big, , but the best shell program I ever wrote was in ReXX for a couple of IBM 4381s running VM/CMS which did distributed printing across a number of physical sites. It saved us

Very fast (faster than naive assembler) but not at all high-level; having to look after the stack is a bit of a pain. Writing your own FORTH is fun - it doesn't need to be in assembler - I once wrote a FORTH-like scripting language in

you don't put extra raw eggs in it, you simply don't fully cook it on the reverse side of the pan and then fold it so the uncooked egg oozes out somewhat.
