It seems to be more a function of the vi-like in use. Old-school vi behaved that way, but (at least some) vim interprets ESC [ A close together as a movement command.

Not emacs (it means kill-region there, which deletes the text between the cursor and the mark and saves it in a holding area, fairly close to what windows does when you hit ^x, except the holding area is fancier). This readline behavior fol

A real problem for some is that standardizing power adapters interferes with the sale of original manufacturers' adapters. The authentication mechanism looks to be designed to fix this revenue leak.

You can see only about half the sky that way, which means usually getting almost as good a fix as with a roof mount antenna. For best results, you want the satellites to be as far apart as possible in the sky (measured by angle from your po

I think we're talking past each other. I'm responding to the comment about the heuristic where for the most part trap (somewhere) means UB. Maybe it's UB only because implementation-specified is too onerous and it didn't

It is an exception to the apparent pattern in which behaviors that trap on one of the early C targets were later declared undefined. Given the standard, it's obvious why i=i++ is undefined: it modifies i twice between sequence points.

UTF-16 has a limit on the size of a code point because a code point is either a single normal code unit or a pair of surrogate code units, each encoding 10 bits of the code point (I think I used the right terminology). UTF-8 has a natural

It looks like the sixth bit is used as rubout (even though per wikipedia, the 0x1f code, letter-shift, was normally used for that purpose).

Arabic? I think the are cases where letters are joined or not by default, but sometimes need to be forced to the other state, depending on meaning that the text layout engine isn't expected to be able to figure out.

Also, man doesn't work the same way as the lower powers of 10. The lower powers 10–1000 take a prefix of 2–9 to multiply them, and omitting the prefix means one. 1 ichi 2 ni 10 juu (not ichi juu) 20 ni juu, literally two ten 100 hyaku

Some libraries supposedly collect statistics on books used in the building, measured by counting books in the to-be-reshelved area, for use when lobbying for funding.

A standard tape horror story is that the old drive ended up out of alignment and later died, then the replacement, same type, was aligned properly (or just differently) and couldn't read the existing tapes.

Anything left in space will likely be destroyed or stolen. Anything in stations (ships, parts, materials, etc) and your cash will still be where you left them. If that's a player-owned station that changed hands while you were out, or

I seem to remember that the installation directions included something to limit memory size, and trying to install without reading the directions would fail well before opening a listener port.

Refining iron or aluminum from ore takes significant energy because you're basically un-rusting it, and that reaction naturally runs the other way; recycled metal gets to reuse that energy investment. I thought the glass process was ba

Sounds like someone meant to use CR1 after CR0, but someone bit-swapped the CR-number bus so you have to encode 4 in the instruction to get 1 where it needs to go.

Think of it from the player's point of view. If you send someone not-quite-trusted or of fallible security $10 worth of btc, then the worst that can happen is you never see it again. If you give them your cc (or worse, debit card) numb
