Well that's exactly my criticism: most of the author's objections boil down to "it's hard". Note that I don't disagree with him (nor with you), but this just doesn't help to expose the real issues with Kurzweil's estimates. To "protein fold

As for the first answer: we all have to learn to deal with roundoff error. That's not by principle an obstacle. The other answer contains an implicit assumption that's not obviously correct: you suggest that complexity only arises when you

Actually I didn't find that very enlightening at all. Code or data - I'd say it's both, depending on your perspective. You need those instructions to build your proteins, after all. It's very lispy ;) The point is, he seems to suggest that

Yes, I think that's his point too. But if you believe that the little details of biology emerge from the underlying physics, then maybe you only need to code the fundamental rules and can have all the rest automatically.

This rant unfortunately fails to clearly demonstrate how Kurzweil errs. It goes on about complexity and emergence, but why would complex interactions not emerge from a computer simulation just as they do in the real biochemical system? Neve

Thanks, that's a good point (I should read Homesteading the Noosphere again :)). I guess I've not been aware of (or sensitive enough to pick up) any clear offences by Canonical in this respect. Maybe that's because I only subscribe to their

Yes, intuitively I'd also expect it to take many generations. But the article's examples - Sweden, Japan (both effects established post-WWII I suppose), the North Carolina district (1990s!) - surprisingly suggest otherwise.

The better choices that you could make are only obvious if you can see the whole landscape of possibilities available to you. If you don't have that bird's eye view, and can only see your local optimum (which is centred on having children e

The issue here isn't whether search engines or ISPs or other middlemen collect deserved or undeserved value; net-neutrality is not at all about capping the ISP's income! Net-neutrality rules are meant to ensure that the ISP will keep a leve

One thing that keeps amazing me about Spotify, is how there's seemingly zero latency when you jump to a new track. This is true for any track - even if you do a search query over the whole catalogue, then hit a random entry in the list of r

Right, that is the key to the issue I think: Spotify can't just include an MP3 decoder, unless they pay licensing fees to Thomson or Fraunhofer or whoever it was. On Windows/Mac, I guess they instead rely on the system-wide codec, but on Li

That's a good point. From personal experience, I strongly suspect this is mostly due to lack of power-management in the GPU drivers. In fact, on machines with Intel integrated GPUs I've seen battery life as good as on Windows.
