Yea, they just open sourced it, so it might take a while for it to be packaged for Debian. I don't even know if it is ported to Linux yet at this point.

Though it is worth mention that the runtime code that implements BIOS services (INT 10h, 11h, 12h, 13h, etc...) for the most part can't switch to protected mode without breaking compatibility.

Yea, this is not about performance. This is about license problems. For code like BIOS, pretty much any good 16-bit C compiler should work.

It would be for things like the BIOS you use to boot your VirtualBox VMs which has to be 16-bit real mode code. Hopefully the compiler itself runs on Linux already (though this is only needed for building the code).

And even for things like BIOS they can be useful, and that is what I am most interested in.

Probably not yet, but the license means that it can be.

And even writing some 16-bit code using gcc is not impossible too. The problem is that it lacks support for things like near and far pointers.

Problem is that x86 segmentation support is lacking, which is important for things like the BIOS.

I have been asking for them to fix the license on Open Watcom for a while now. A C compiler that has full support for x86 segmentation would be very useful for some projects.

It would be fun to port the Mac version to x86.

I don't like the idea of the current debt based economy that allows infinite amount of US debt to be printed in the first place, effectively meaning that other countries has to be poorer.

This completely ignores that the definition of open source code is that it can be audited.

The fun thing is the 286 didn't fix this either. This is why the MOV SS came first (in protected mode the selector may not be present for example). This was a problem for DOS where SS was often used to access the DOS data segment.

That one will take trace exceptions though.

I bet whitelisting only instructions that can change SP/ESP would not break the majority of x86 code. All other instructions would behave as if MOV SS had not been executed.

I wonder why my essay has gotten little attention: http://yuhongbao.blogspot.ca/2018/04/google-doubleclick-mozi... I was planning to write it before Facebook hits the news.

They didn't even do the LSS instruction until the 386.
