   The US likes to have cute "official positions" that are completely orthogonal to their actual behavior. Cf its positions that there must be a "two state solution" in Palestine, or its position on Northern Cyprus, etc.

   The difference is that you only have one life, which you are risking in the examples, whereas VCs have many dollars, of which they only risk a part on each trade.

   The former affects blacks, which are a recognized political constituency. The latter allows you to debank your political opponents (cf Operation Chokehold), which is useful.
