Good post. But the used definition of "rewrite" is a bit broad, calling a piecewise refactor and rewrite of some components a general rewrite explains the more positive stance towards the issue. Doing a start-from-scratch rewrite

Part of the advantage is that you can update the protocol implementation independently of the OS. So google does not have to lobby OS vendors to implement TCP fast-open and other extensions to make their stack faster.

This is a PR pitch to a market that only has very technical customers. Probably just some GPU sound processing framework without any integration in existing ecosystems.

OS could make Hyper threading opt-in per application thread. So chrome could mark its render threads as HT-groupable and they can share a core between them, but otherwise cores are not shared. There might be different levels of thread opt-i

Bad experience in the past probably. Also this probably just leads to the official recommendation to disable Hyper-Threading "for security critical applications" or some PR blurb.

Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linked_timestamping This is technology from the 90s. The innovation of blockchain is the no-trust agreement protocol.

It's a merkle tree, not every hash tree or chain is a blockchain thing. IMO blockchain describes the combination of a hash chain and the no-trust agreement protocol on top.

Maybe messages should include a coarse timestamp to prevent replay of old messages by some adversary. Someone could resend a month old "yes" with your valid signature to a question someone asks now. Also it might be beneficial to

Android Things is not included in normal Android as it seems. Android Treble/9 is just not even close to a microkernel. It if was, there would be documentation on how to write a userspace device driver, but there isn't.

I actually looked into the HAL/HIDL docs before posting and found no evidence that they are there to implement drivers in userspace. As I understand it HALs and HIDL are used to provide a standardized way to implement new device featur

Nobody claims faults of core functions must be survivable in microkernel designs. The restarting of driver processes is a nice trick, but in the end the isolation and clean interfacing are particularly useful in an imperfect world. The goal

I don't see a microkernel architecture here. Requiring drivers to be loadable modules is just arriving in the 1990s of monolithic kernels. Also, only new devices with SoCs introduced for Android 9 are required to use kernel modules and

What advantage would the 10nm process have for base stations? Possibly in the micro-cell stuff for 5G, but none of this runs on battery. Established 16 or 28nm processes are cheap and run smoothly. I read an interview with GlobalFoundries w
