It’s not even a hypothetical. That’s what was happening (at least towards the end) during socialism in Eastern Europe. Since everybody had to have a job, the over-employment produced a lot of slackers. Same thing was also happening in Gulag

Yeah. This is something that existed in pro software forever. You can have unlimited toolbars and all the buttons you want. But don’t have to. Web and mobile apps just removed the UI customization altogether.

There is no good middle. Either have no options, or have many and make them configurable. I use 4 of those 5 options all the time. But there are other places where options make me slow because I need to was through them.

I think this is a good practice anyway. Putting as much code as possible into silos with guarded permissions. Historically plugins have been kind of crappy because they were constantly breaking with updates. However if they only live as a s

Eh. The useful LLM usage I see is in internal tools (bugs don’t matter because the output or UI is the only thing that counts and they are throw away) or personal projects that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Both of these can be quite invisible.

To me the biggest gotcha with AI code is that the bugs are not “normal”. When reviewing human code I focus on specific parts because I know that there are parts where a person will just not make a bug (unless very junior). AI on the other h

Yup. Lit element is much more accessible if you want “just” web components, but with a sane syntax.

Every time I needed to do charts at work I had a conundrum. Libraries are aplenty but basically only plotly does everything, but it’s not the prettiest. I’d much rather developers contributed new features into existing libraries.

This (fixing bugs, making code better, refactoring), is the best fit for AI. I think a lot of us were excited that we will finally be able to polish our old software. Many of us were never given the opportunity and were tasked to produce ne

LLMs by themselves are but most applications built on top of them are not. If the code/data separation can not be solved then the whole approach need to be scrapped.

It’s the good old white text on white background. Not really a way to defend against this, except having a no-style or high contrast mode that people actually use. Maybe some warning that would trigger if text is too small, off page or has

Also the drive to innovate goes down. It took weeks for the creator of 2048 to make a low quality clone of Threes. Now people can make relatively high quality ripoffs in days, even hours.

30 years ago was the 90’s, when just about everything peaked. The things I’d be truly missing from today 30 years ago, would be the advances in medicine really and the fact that we don’t have the ozone layer threat. Most other things have p

Working with AI has been way more tiring than just working. Sure the productivity is up, at the cost of having to keep up many thought threads, having no calm moments, and needing to consistently dig into large unknown code cases to find we

I think by now we have enough evidence to support that point of view. Not everybody up top is a crook, but not having morals or abandoning them along the way certainly makes it easier to ascend.
