Last I heard Microsoft's format didn't even fully adhere to their own standard (although that may have been due to really bad standard authoring rather than anything intentional).

Relatedly, our crime rate here in Minnesota dives every winter. Even the criminals know when it's too cold to bother going out. http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cspg/smartpolitics/2009/04/minneapol... (check out the fun graph)

I've plugged this here before: I am a big fan of Tracks ( http://getontracks.org/ ). I think I fall much more on the featureful side of the spectrum than people who like the text file approach or something spartan like Gmail tasks. I'll hav

Exactly. Ten years ago a lot of people would have told you that you need central control of code and full-time work from paid developers in a central office with careful managerial oversight to build powerful software. And all those peopl

I've seen this story before, and I just don't get it. Mel doesn't sound to me like a "Real Programmer." He sounds like the kind of person I wouldn't even consider hiring or collaborating with. I would have spent most of the debugging proces

This is an attack that circumvents a specific anti-phishing mechanism these sites use. So while obviously other types of phishing attacks are possible against these sites, this one is more dangerous and is targeted at certain sites in parti

Is the generic-ness meaningful on legal grounds, or just giving you better odds that no one will take it personally, panic, and call in the lawyers? I'm assuming the latter, since I imagine most litigation that arises in situations like thi

There were times in university where I would get up at 6 pm, and go to sleep at 6 am. I couldn't understand so-called "morning people". Now, though, if I go to bed tired at 10:30 pm, I wake up rested at 6:30 am. It really is a matter of tr

If the rest of the world wasn't so rigorously attached to monophasic, I don't see why it would be so difficult. It's not an inherently unworkable schedule, it's just that our work, commerce, and socializing all take forms that don't accommo

Here's how I read that statement: IE6 and IE7 were only the "best IE yet" at release due to how truly awful each previous incarnation was. IE7 is a lousy browser, so calling it the "best IE yet" at the time was like saying that chewing on t

These were my thoughts exactly. There's nothing incongruous about saying "I think Jews are dirty and evil but I respect your right to believe otherwise." He implies that hate speech infringes on the free speech of others in some way, which

Functional language? Did you mean to say procedural language? I can assure you that PHP is not a functional language (despite all my efforts to make it one).

I've been using Tracks ( http://getontracks.org/ ) now for quite a while and am pretty happy with it. The downside is that you have to host it yourself or pay a small fee for a hosted version. But it's pretty powerful, implements the genera
