I haven't seen any such email. It definitely can be a lot of work at times, esp around re:invent, and I'm sure there are those with bad experience. I'm just saying, it's worth giving a shot. You might like it. If you don

Sad to hear. I agree with legacy code, tho it's not that bad on my team. When was this? Just to confirm, you're referring to a data plane team and not a control plane team?

I work at AWS on EC2. It's really not bad. Very competent coworkers, technical leadership, plenty of principal engineers willing to help... Oncall's tough, and we definitely need more engineers but otherwise, you learn a lot

EC2 live migrates instances too. Not sure where we are with rollout across the fleet. The reason, from what I understand, why GCP does live migration more is because ec2 focused on live updates instead of live migration. Whereas GCP migrate

In college, I was able to sample a lot of computer science from building a pipelined cpu in verilog, algorithms, writing a multi-threaded OS, implementing animation engine in opengl, quantum computing, machine learning (lots of theory and l

As a counterpoint, I work in AWS on an ec2 core team and couldn't be happier. Remote work, learn a ton, capable coworkers, lots of interaction with other engineers from other team, and easy access to principal engineers. Cons, could al

Traders at Optiver and other reputable firms are for sure making at least that much. Their pay is variable, but I think you generally hit 7 figure annual payouts really fast. Even new grad software engineers make 350+ at Jane Street, HRT an

The common path in my circle these days is to get a degree in computer science and maybe math. Then you apply to trading firms for internships/jobs. If you get them, great, make 500+ as a newgrad. If you dont, you can use FAANG or unic

I certainly wouldn't expect this from any of my coworker in their early 20s. This is bullying. I would have reported a coworker to HR for this.

I work at Amazon. Less than 2 yoe but is comp is solid, even compared to Goog and Meta, perhaps cause I'm currently top of band. Wlb is amazing. Did 5-6 hour days on last team. Coworkers were chill. Now I work more (6-7 hour days) caus

I used to feel the same. The work I was doing at the last startup was just REST level work. Work at current team at Amazon was fun at first with new serverless technologies, but I ramped up in a month and it's now data pipelines and fu

Took his Haskell PL class and really liked it. Coolest thing I remember was learning about using the return value of a function as it's own argument thanks to Haskell laziness. He had great lectures and lecture notes. Amazing guy, RIP

Like a sibling comment said, the number of hours worked isn't tracked. Downside: If you're oncall, you might have to stay up for 18 hours straight of something big goes wrong, and you won't get paid any overtime.

I work at Amazon and the work-life-balance is pretty chill. I do my 35 hours a week (7 hours a day--8 including lunch) and completely disconnect outside of that. Manager has been chill so far, expectations couldn't be clearer and are p

I only have 1 YOE and I'll say the numbers sound right. A friend with 2 YOE got 2 290K offers. Another friend/former co-worker with 8 YOE got a 400K+ offer. These numbers are all for remote roles for SV-based companies. You can al

US high school education is not uniform throughout the country. Are you going by some states' requirements here or are you assuming some amount of AP credits?
