One of my few very good teachers in school highlighted that people learn differently - some people by reading, others doing and others again watching. I'm most definitely somewhere between the last two. I find that for me watching high

The positives is that official support means linux/whatever distribution the vendor has chosen is nearly guaranteed to work on the host and pushes for component manufacturers to support Linux if they want to end up in Lenovo workstatio

Yeah, that's probably true. I don't have any visibility over that particular projects ticketing system but I imagine it was never raised given it wasn't fixed until I noticed it.

Is there a standard for valid flags? I recently recommended a client use `TODOSECURITY` for todos which had security implications until fixed - I discovered functionality which was implemented before authorisation had been developed, result

I imagine those numbers wouldn't be all that reliable for a bunch of reasons - companies would have vested interests in over or under reporting costs for various reasons, technology progressions mean previously expensive to develop dru

If by 'they', you mean the blackhats for discovering and abusing the exploits then yes. I imagine MS/Chrome will treat this as an emergency out-of-cycle patch which I don't think many people would disagree with :)

I don't disagree with anything you've said, but in my opinion strongly typed function definitions/returns are about communication rather than dictation - I'd rather the compiler tell me that I'm passing an unexpecte

I've coded in python for >10 years and C# for ~half of that. I prefer indentation-based control flow purely because it condenses code vertically and creates consistent indentation with actual purpose (many of the devs on C# project

Now if only we could get Hacker News to support emojis Edit: This comment ended in man-shrugging, but Hacker News stripped the emoji.

Sweet, does that mean that there's no binary drivers (eg nvidia-drivers vs nouveau)? Have you had any issues you suspect may be driver / gfx related?

How is graphics performance / functionality? I've only ever really dealt wit nVidia and Intel graphics, and highly prefer intel due to tearing fixes. I'm not a gamer, but do need at least basic hardware acceleration for X ren

The intended definition of opportunistic is not knowing about the vulnerability, but otherwise capable of exploiting it.

> Any motivated attacker would have already noticed it too you'd think. Motivated is a keyword here. Opportunistic attacks occur, and probably make up for the majority of such attacks.

The article mentions preloading but doesn't go into detail. You can apply for Chrome preload via https://hstspreload.org/ which I ends up in Chrome source, the list is then replicated to other browsers by their maintan

I find the keyboard layout switching really awkward but for different reasons. On MacOS/Linux, setting the keyboard layout is global - under windows it's per-application and the default is for shift-backtick to switch between la

I think there are sections of Microsoft that are very, very good but crappier sections are bringing down company perception somewhat - the company vision is somewhat confused when they drop a cross-platform SQL server and then introduce tel

I feel like this is just moving business logic /back/ into the database. It' very similar to what we were doing with stored procs 15 years ago and just moves the problem from business logic back to database layer. Given the c

Yeah, but apple.sucks is far more iconic than applesucks.com. I'm sure companies as large as Apple would have purchased both, and other variations as a defensive move. I can't think of any other justification for .sucks to charge

I'm really sad that registering clin.sucks would cost me $250USD or whatever. The intent of the TLD seller is to hold companies to ransom (buy yourcompany.sucks, or someone that hates you will). I'd kill clin.sucks as a mail domai

I don't really care what outputs the data I see. I care about how it's formatted and whether that format is easily readable + usable by consuming utilities. I don't understand why your being standoffish over a technicality.

True, but it's driven the method for output for a long time. If sh/bash exposed functions for objective output I'm sure a lot more utilities commonly in use would output in a similar methodology.

I would _kill_ for a shell that returns bash-like data to stdout, but a JSON blob to pipes, or whatever the not-1970 concept of a pipe would be.

oh-my-zsh has 'sane' defaults (and by that I mean 4-8 hours of configuration at least). I'm in the process of moving from that to self-managed zsh and I'm surprised with the stuff that doesn't come default with ZSH,
