I have a Kindle, Ipad, and android phone (Droid X). Kindle: Pro: One great thing about the kindle is battery life and how easy it is on the eyes. For reading fiction, it's great. Con: It is horrible for technical work--pdfs in particular

The LA times had an interesting series ( http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/22/local/la-me-schools-... ) on value added metrics in education that was interesting. The basic idea is that you look at the median achievement scores for stude

I also found martial arts to be a great workout! Sparring was a lot of fun (especially against people from different styles) and burned a lot of calories. Now, I play badminton--it's not sparring, but it does move quickly :>

I think there are a few factors at work: 1) In the developed world for people with good incomes and health insurance, people live in relative safety and misjudge risk. Many diseases are rare or nonexistent, so are not viewed as risks as c

How do you judge that? If you write a paper and no one cites it, is it important (a tree falls in a forest...)? This is a serious question--I agree that h-index is vulnerable to fads, but if one adds aging (the effect of citations decays

I also thoroughly enjoyed my undergraduate research opportunities and they played a large part in how I chose my university. It's also an area where I think the US does very well--introducing students to research early in their careers.
