I think it varies drastically by subfield. I'm a physicist, and while there are some subcommunties that are cutthroat, there are many that are small and where people are pretty helpful to each other. I think a lot of it may also depend on

Just a small comment--Princeton used to not require coursework--only quals. but it is rare to see this in current universities.

What about using git and s3? Any thoughts on this? I've seen it done for both java and python (dulwich I believe) implementations of git (as well as hg)--but not cgit. Would one have to do this using webdav or fuse?

There's an excellent book that I'm reading called "The innovator's dilemma" which seems relevant to your case. The difficulty with established competitors is that their middle management gets in the way--that is, if you're charging less an

It's an incentive question: Researchers are often evaluated based on the papers they produce (impact and numbers)--not based on how maintainable our code base is. If I can keep a cobbled together code base going and still produce code, th

The problem with Matlab is that while it is fast for prototyping, it's difficult to write maintainable code in it (which is why I switched to python). Furthermore, you run into the issue of sharing code with people at institutions that don

I doubt that removing tenure would result in the hiring of new professors. One recent trend has been to hire adjuncts as much as possible and to only slowly hire tenured faculty. Let's suppose that you have a professor (say a theorist) wh

It's not clear what this means: a) Amazon has to provide a way of purchasing content via the apple store (and presumably can do so at 30% markup). Meanwhile, books that you purchased to read on your computer, kindle, android phone, etc. i

I'm actually rather sad about this--but I remember when Borders was the small bookstore back home....When they started, they were technically savvy. Also, I really liked how they really seemed to love books. I'd tell them that I planned t

I'll echo that that depends very much on funding source. For some university postdocs, it is around $35K, for NIH postdocs, it's less than $50K. Given that the typical postdoc has done a PhD for 5-7 years and many people do two postdocs,

I think there is a contrast. If I need an answer and I need it now, then yes, transcripts are quicker. But, suppose I want to learn say, javascript, then a video lecture might be more useful. I wonder if they will do ads within the video

I've been looking at this recently. I'm still not sure about using bcrypt (SHA512 for example is part of the python standard library), but we should at least be using SHA2 instead of SHA1. One possibility is to use google's KeyGen to encr
