For further analysis, I would suggest embedding something nasty into a .doc. [1] Seriously, why would Dropbox execute code in arbitrary files; the only reason I can see is some virus scanner heuristic. So then they could spin up a new vm, l

I think JS is as horrible as C++, since it has all the implicit casting to string rules, besides a lot of other quirks. ( I am not sure which language I would advocate, probably either Python or C, one because of all of the nice features, t

I did not read the tardis paper, but the mass distribution gives you at least a upper limit, in the sense that if there is not much mass in one direction, then there is also not much deflection. At least in more or less normal models.

At least in Germany you get the problem that the basic idea of research groups is rather feudal. ( That is the original idea when universities were invented in the late middle ages was, that professors get a personal fiefdom.) And this make

Yes, but that is a rather general problem. Best you can do is to look at the so called Lyman-alpha forest, which gives you essentially the mass distribution along the path. And this gives you a good estimate for the deflection.

We measure spectra. So there would be no way to measure the redshift of a single wavelength, e.g. a laser, but since we have the full spectra, we can measure the relative position of spectral features and the wavelength of these features to

The cracking technique discussed is dictionary plus some common substitutions. So the hashing algorithm is not very important. You would loose some factor of speed, but the 1000 most common passwords times 10 common substitutions, perhaps w

Considering that the cheapeast tabletts did go from a $500 iPad 1 in 2010 to less than $50 [1] now, this seems probable. ( Extrapolating, we end up with roughly $1 in 2020 and tablets become essentially consumables one can throw away when t

Depends on the breakthrough, we know that multiplication is in P and therefore factorization in NP. So a P?=NP breakthrough may or may not have consequences for integer factorization. ( Actually since I did write that, I wonder if P=NP woul

Yes, I should have read the wiki link. However my point was, that Suite B is so generic that we can not really speculate why the NSA did recommend this set of algos and not something else.

Other way round, multiplication is in P, so integer factorization is in NP. And a breakthrough in P?=NP could have implications for factorization.

Judging from the wikipedia link, Suite B does not contain a public key cypher. Which either tells us, that the NSA does not use asymmetric cyphers because they are broken. Or that they have a technical reason for it, like being able to do
