Nothing at all. But, if Julia takes off, I would not expect it to be the main selling point. It can be a very interesting feature for somebody into language design, but the average Joe working in a lab is not going to learn a completely new

The scientific community is not going to adopt any new language until most used idioms can be easily found in a quick search and copy-pasted. It is extremely difficult to arrive there. I totally agree that having dynamic dispatch in the fir

I do not do that. I have copied and pasted git clone commands directly in my terminals many times. The questions is, for those who do it, how often you notice a malicious command and this saves your day.

Indeed, there are some exceptions. In the book "La Colmena" (I guess it is called "The Hive" in English), by Camilo Jose Cela, there is a man who invents words. He meets with writers in a café, and all of them listen to

Thank you very much for a very detailed answer. It is much clearer to me what are the strengths of the project now. Something I wonder is if there are any plans to make blabs capable of dealing with the heavy computations needed in scientif

Isn't this the case for every word? I would cut off my right hand if you found, for example, the word banana in old texts from the time before bananas were discovered.

As somebody who has to deal with spreadsheets every day and hates that workflow, I really appreciate the initiative. That said, I would like to see a more clear explanation of what is the use case. Scientific computing is a too general term

Yes, but isn't it expected to find that information in the "About" section of the main site instead of needing to search for it? I am just asking for an introductory paragraph like the first paragraph in that Wikipedia articl

I would think any question starting with "Would you..." gets more chances of getting a "Yes" as an answer when the person you are asking is drunk, whatever is the question.

That's not true. Funding is important, but once you have it you stop looking for more. I've been working in research for years, both in companies and universities, and I have always been involved in long-term projects, so I have n

This is a key aspect. There is a pressure (both institutional and self-imposed) to produce something original and unique, so trying to reproduce other people results is seen as a lost of time. Either you confirm previous results, which is n

Overreacting by immense proportions is what reddit does. I do not know any details about Victoria's firing and I do not care about them, but obviously somebody up there did a terrible job managing the whole situation.

It depends how you define success. It is indeed a remarkable achievement to have survived this long and have a (growing? I think so) speaker community, and I could agree it is worth learning. But the goal was not to just work, or have a sma
