Sigh. Sometimes posts like these make me want to go back to academia (it's not perfect, but they generally believe in this little thing called rigor). From TFA: I tested nginx as a proxy, serving static files, and serving nginx-generated r

You're asking people not to have a knee-jerk reaction to offensive language, but you're having a knee-jerk reaction to people being offended. Some people might choke on their morning coffee when reviewing a pull request for "pantyshot", but

Perhaps it's a difference of experience, but I really haven't met a professional programmer who doesn't understand regexes but still insists on using them for non-trivial tasks. Thus my usage of "disingenuous", because I have trouble believ

My bad about Green Day -- it was the Offspring I was thinking about (can't blame me, they're almost interchangeable as bands). On the other hand, rockers with PhDs: Dexter Holland from Offspring (molecular biology, but dropped out with a ma

A correctly written regex is not a bad programming practice. The insinuation that most programmers can't write or debug a regex correctly is disingeneous.

Interesting thoughts, and I agree with most of them. Perhaps you could think of my two number scale as a first approximation...? :)

Jokes aside, I like to fit people into two numbers between 0 and 1, non-inclusive. The first, number A represents your gender identification, with 0 being ideally female and 1 ideally male (remember the scale is non inclusive of the bounds)

Hi Brandon, I appreciate the quick response. I would, at the very least, work with a copywriter rather than formulating your own copy (there are plenty that will work for free, to build their portfolio). In the meantime, I look forward to t

Is it just me, or do the Thiel Fellow projects seem to suffer from hubris? I understand that the founders are young and a little naive, but instead of lofty claims like: "No longer will we navigate endlessly in search of reliable content"

There are millions of prescription drug abusers living in upper middle class suburbs; are they overwhelmingly guilty of prostitution and supporting a crime infrastructure too?

Unlikely is an understatement -- the probability of an infinite sequence of PRNG outputs that prevents any sort algorithm from terminating is negligible.

While I agree in principle, there are many cases where you don't care about the statistical quality of a random shuffle, where brevity has its benefit.

Wow, I'm seriously overjoyed to discover the "yield" operator, which I did not know existed (it barely shows up anywhere!). No more hackishly using window.setTimeout() to yield in JS pseudo-thread simulations!

While the news feed is certainly not trivial, I think you have a point in that it wasn't news feed's technical prowess that made it a game changing feature for facebook. In fact, there was a pretty vocal displeasure among its user base ab

Back in my day, copying a competitor's feature was denounced as ripping off. Just because it's institutionalized as a "hack" is no reason for assigning it much more importance.

I disagree. Social networking, unlike skype or email, requires low cognitive load--you come to hang out on your own terms. While group video chat is a convenient feature when you need it, it's not going to fundamentally change the game.

This is a great idea, and I agree NaCl is the most exciting thing I've seen in a while. However, the modern JS engines already have JIT compilers for JS. As these improve more, JS effectively becomes your "bytecode". That's also an entirely

What a vapid comment. GP is perfectly within his rights to gripe about people performing a stressful job admirably while receiving less money than they deserve. Saying "start your own airline" hardly advances the conversation. As a counterp
