Often it's license incompatibilities. Even open geodata is often licensed in a way incompatible with OSM. E.g. a typical attribution requirement would require OSM data consumers to include the full list of data sources in the attributi

AVX-512 is not a dedicated sorting instruction set, but rather instructions dedicated to doing the same computations in parallel over 512 bit wide registers. So you can do the same operation in the same time for 8 doubles, 16 integers, or 6

I think one goal is to at least get the state from before the earthquake, even if many buildings are expected to be gone (and then you can just tag the building as destroyed:building= ). But you can coordinate humanitarian efforts much easi

Well, the Haiti earthquake in 2010 marked the start of what HOTOSM do and since then they seem to steadily improve maps where disasters are likely to strike or where needed for current humanitarian efforts (e.g. there was a project on impro

The difference may be regex matching. This can often be optimized to an impressive degree, depending on the regex, but unless it's a simple substring search without any metacharacters, I'm not sure those approaches are comparable.

I did some OpenStreetMap work recently with aerial imagery in the US in such a suburb and was a bit surprised to see that the streets where people lived (not arterial roads through the suburb) were about 10 m wide. I feel the residential st

How does that work in preventing mold in dwellings, though? Moist air (byproduct of living things in enclosed spaces) likes settling on cool walls, so heating has other benefits than just keeping a comfortable living temperature.

Well, the source code is available, but as there is no license you can't really consider it open-source.

Well, there are lots of different handwritings. Not everyone writes cursive (especially in the US it seems to be very rare). My own handwriting is something like a hybrid between cursive and print with a few contextual ligatures thrown in.

Isn't that pretty standard for compiler error messages? The C# compiler uses CS\d{4} for example. MSVC, MSBuild, various other build tools (at least on the Microsoft side) all use similar patterns with different prefixes. That being sa

Tests usually cannot prove absence of defects. But they can show presence of defects. So yes, a test suite that runs without errors tells you “nothing” in a way. But it's a very good safeguard to ensure that code changes don't

It's rare that you actually are able to go that fast for prolonged periods of time. For one, lots of stretches of the Autobahn have a speed limit. Secondly, there's also other traffic, traffic jams, construction sites, ...

The Nürburgring is a private road and does not meet criteria for calling it an Autobahn (it's a one-way road without lanes, which kinda rules out Autobahn-ness).

Toilets on trains (at least in Germany) work that way. Presumably because it cuts down on the amount of water necessary to flush, but may have other benefits as well.

I wouldn't expect SVGs that require double precision to render anywhere properly. Most renderers these days use 32-bit floats simply because it's easier to get things to render on the GPU that way, so at very large or very small s
