I wrote a quote simulator for my mom's cleaning business a while back. You give it the room count, floor type, wc count, etc... and it produces an estimate of the size of the property and how much it would cost to hire the service. To estim

During an interview at the London office I asked about working hours and I was told you can pick from either 8:00 to 18:00 or 9:00 to 19:00. I was also told that my money making side projects would not be allowed or would have to be "approv

I payed for a Unity license to do work for a client but I still prefer to use C++/Ogre3D/SFML for other projects where I need a bit more control.

Cinder is not written for performance. I use it just to open an window and get a basic update/render loop. It is too slow to write games in. [EDIT] I will actually have a go with polycode to see if it solves the issues I have now with some

Interesting. I don't know signal processing theory, but I derived the same formula years ago to filter high frequency changes in motion. Now I know what to call it: an exponential moving average.

Great work guys! I am writing a game with my friends on our spare time and we have kept all the builds since the beginning so we could document it's progress with a video as well. Glad to see that people respond well to this. Wish you the b

I have been using Lua to script the audio sequencer on the game I am writing and it rocks. No performance problems at all, even on an second generation iPod Touch. And it is very easy to call Lua from C++ and C++ from Lua.

I don't get it. FB is so proud of "hiring the best engineers" and then they have to resort to this kind of hacks to run their app?

I recently had a phone interview that went rather well for a very interesting position but the company asks a minimum of 45 hours per week and that is a deal breaker for me.

There are quite a lot of Android based desktop computers available, some with better specs and cheaper than the VIA offering. Just google for "Android USB Mini PC". This could be a potential problem for Microsoft.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago, working in games in London. The only way I found to increase my salary was switching to finance. It's not an interesting field to me, but my income doubled.

I installed the 750GB/8GB Momentus XT on my late 2008 MBP and it has been a breath of fresh air. Previously I had a 500GB WD Scorpio Black. That was fast but it vibrated a lot and I think battery life was worse than with the Momentus. I mai

I really enjoyed your talk, particularly the part about building the Analytical Engine and how Babbage thought about instruction pipelining, in cogs! Can't wait to see this machine built.

Not surprising. I left Portugal in 2003 to work in the games industry. There were still plenty of jobs in Lisbon then and salaries were not so bad. At the time I thought I would be away for a couple of years "just to get some experience". I

Agreed. I have been working from home for more than a year now and I do feel isolated. When I am working on something interesting this doesn't affect me much, but when I am stuck in a problem it is easy to feel a bit anxious and depressed.

Excel is used quite a lot in the finance sector. I my previous job I had to write a plugin to allow traders to do some simple algo trading in Excel. Oh, and once you are forced to work in VBA all other languages seem amazing.
