Step #1 should be clearing cookies and cache. It's solved most of my Gmail problems when I have them.

Yes, records, but not paper records. Your latest link again reinforces the idea that you can keep scanned copies. Earlier it seemed like your point was you shouldn't scan/destroy tax records because you need paper copies in an audit. I do

Oddly, their popup/lightbox (asking me "Did you enjoy this article? Sign up for our newsletter!") that blocked the entire page when I was halfway through reading the article caused me to click the button to convert right off of the page.

How about purposefully not providing Adobe Flash on your mobile dev ice because it's insecure and unstable? Nah, that'll never work.

There's a crowd-sourced database of websites that commit this sin (of storing/returning passwords in plain text), but I can't find it on Google now. Consider me jaded, while this is good information to have, it seems a bit too common-place

I agree. It's just perception without any real basis for it, but I've always perceived AmEx as the company to do charges with if you expect to have issues and need a charge-back. Of course, this website is a single counter anecdote, so it's

You don't necessarily need a mobile version, but having the "public URL" version of a page be chopped off could hurt adoption. The resulting HTML is pretty straightforward, so I guess there's some CSS problem blocking me from scrolling.

There's no way to scroll the page when viewing in Android browser. The page just gets chopped off and doesn't extend beyond the visible area, meaning no scroll. If I zoom out I can see more, but even on the linked page that means it's kind

I doubt this will get a lot of comments, since pretty much everything he said is spot on. I do wish I could avoid having to run the emulator just to test my code - it's usually faster to deploy/test on my own phone rather than in the emulat

It can be, but only if console.log is defined in your source code. It isn't when you use Firebug, so it won't be when you're not using Firebug.

Well, num is the stable variable, it's i that's the issue. Grokking what's going on here is one of the more important parts of using closures without introducing unexpected bugs.

I'm going to guess desktop browsers and netbooks also have more browser usage than Android. Are people surprised that a bunch of purpose-built web browsing device is used for browsing the web more than a bunch of mobile phone?

What's the point of accepting for filing (during which for many things you don't submit the record to the IRS anyway), and not accepting for audit? That seems more backward than even I'd expect the IRS to be. The link you sent doesn't seem

I never found Wesabe as compelling as Yodlee or Mint. Mint won in my mind because it did similar things and had similar atmosphere, but without making me do all of the work. That, and I could never keep straight if it was "Wesabi" or "Wasab

If that's what he meant, his comment was pretty much useless. Anyway, I misread "traverse" for "reverse", hence my incredulous comment. Perhaps traverse means different things to the two of us.

Ok, but I've never had to scan them - it's been literally years since I haven't been able to find a manual online. We all have our quirks. I just hate paper/clutter. More than I love books, which means my book collection is in limbo...

Search for and download those product manuals and put them in a digital shelf. You never look at them, anyway, do you? Most manuals can be easily found on the web these days. Unless I plan to resell a small electronic, I don't keep the manu

C and C++ seem to be the languages of choice lately for the interview complaints. I wonder if that's indicative of the language itself or of the number of people who actually program in those languages. Of the questions / problems expressed

I wonder how many Hacker News readers are also gardeners. I started this year after realizing how wasted our (pitifully) small back yard was. It's not much, but I'm growing some plants back there and am about to have the first harvest of to

There are little quirks in the service that make it seem pretty obvious the (first) custom sub-domains and then (later) custom domains were added on later. The namespace issue seems downright silly until you remember that fact. Now that eve

Switching URLs is nothing like switching shortcuts. The impact is one person on switching keyboard shortcuts, but if I switch around URLs I'm impacting hundreds (or thousands). I'm no "pro blogger" by any means, but I have a couple of posts

Agreed. That and dates in URLs (or at least search by date) would be handy. I just migrated a blog over and ran into the same issue. In my case, I was ok with changing domains as well, so I set up a load of redirects on the old one to the n
