Is tar really only expected to work in a standard shell script setup? It's a general-purpose utility after all. Python not wanting to handle SIGPIPE is perfectly fine. It is less clear whether it's fine for python to keep it disab

Yeah, the problem is not on the python script side. It seems like a problem with tar or gzip. Tar expects gzip to react graciously to SIGPIPE. Gzip only registers a SIGPIPE handler if SIGPIPE is not ignored. This is either a bug in gzip, or

I believe the parent comment was thinking about screen and camera quality, which can be benchmarked, contribute to the user experience and have significant costs.

Humans often also reward politeness by keeping a "sympathy" score and elevating the resources (time, thought and effort) used to be helpful ;) Since ChatGPT training data includes human conversations, it might be that it's ju

Yeah, it feels like smartphones are finally maturing, and they are no longer new enough to justify the fast release cycles and short support times.

"People buy it, so someone will make it" doesn't apply when they're at the size of Apple. They absolutely make things that no one else could make if they didn't.

Exactly, strategically underpricing certain products at specific times allows them to lower competition and charge higher prices on average.

To stay with the fond analogy: It gets interesting if the fond preparation involves deglazing a pan (mutable environment) with meat bits and juices left at the bottom (state/precondition). Two options: - Linear code: The meat frying (s

I suspect GP only read the title and not the article. A Java-style GC might make async code easier, but that never existed in Rust.

Intuitively, you might think "I'll just bid a few cents less than what the thing is worth to me, then I'll get a fair deal". However: 1. You likely don't know the value exactly, so you might overbid (or underbid) 2.

With trade secrets, you can still independently discover them later. With patents, you have to check your own inventions on whenther they infringe patents, which is kind of ridiculous.

Does it really need the toss/return syntax to loop? You could use let loop = func(state, self) { let next = foo(state); self(foo); }; loop(start, loop);

I've seen the O(n) notation used quite a few times already to mean "order of magnitude of", instead of the usual Landau-big O.

That is just a false dichotomy. Of course the thieves are at fault, but the manufacturer is also liable because they failed to ensure even the most basic degree of security.

There is no relationship. I can take apart my front door including the lock without a problem, and it is still secure. Security is a property of the locked state, repairability a property of the unlocked state.
