From what I understand, if dark matter is stuff that only interacts gravitationally, by definition it is transparent to light. Also collisions, being ultimately electromagnetic interactions, aren't observed. So it's not transparen

"Let's Build a Compiler"[1] by Jack Crenshaw is fantastic. It uses Pascal as the implementation language, but I used Rust, and while the book targets 68000 assembly, I compiled things to x86_64 assembly. [1]: http:/

CitiBank used to send me spam about credit cards (I used to own one a few years ago). The opt-out link led to a page where I must fill out an elaborate form with the CC number and address and whatnot to unsubscribe from spam I never asked f

Not OP, but I'm applying to some graduate programs this year that lead to a Ph.D. in CS, and some institutes have a hard requirement of a Masters degree for getting into their Ph.D. programs, while some (like most top US universities,

This is a great story, and I'm glad that a simple tradition helped comfort a fellow human. But while I do understand that most people likely do not take the religious reasons behind rituals too seriously, I find the following wicked: &

That's Grafana[1]. You can build such dashboards from data in Graphite, Elasticsearch or other sources. IIRC, they now also have support for alerting based on these metrics (something for which we are using Bosun currently). [1]: http

Ha, nice. I must admit I just do `perl -nafe` almost out of muscle memory, without paying too much attention to what the options mean individually. Thanks for this :)

A very useful idiom I often use is $ foo |perl -nafe '<code>' Where <code> will be wrapped in a while(<>){ ... }. You can access the current line normally with $_ and either print out something everytime

I'm at work and a Dutch guy is speaking on the phone behind me, and then I hear this guy talk with a Dutch accent. It felt creepy as hell for a moment.

Same for me, where WhatsApp randomly tries to "reconnect" for audio only calls, Skype works flawlessly with video. Also, with Skype, I can make really cheap international calls to phones. I only wish they'd not abandoned the

C came from the B language, which itself came from BCPL. In that way, the next true successor of C will have to be P, and sure enough, we have something going on here: https://plang.codeplex.com/ :)

What about a local "internal/secret" package with a dep on left-pad v1.5? Redownloading all the deps (say, on a new box) will fail for left-pad 1.5, and someone has to go and change the dep manually to $PREFIX-left-pad?
