I guess that you and I had different interpretations of the Arc challenge. I thought it was intended to demonstrate how easy it is to implement multi-page flows in Arc by binding closures to links and forms. I didn't think it was intended t

Just because Erlang is very good at solving a certain class of problems, doesn't mean it's inferior at solving general computing problems. The Erlang challenge highlights what Erlang is good at, but it's not meant to convince you that Erlan

I must say that I am taken aback by the title you used to link to my article. I did not mean it as a snide response to the Arc challenge. I thought the Arc challenge was pretty cool, and I replied to it with an Erlang implementation -- yo

I've been using Erlang to create ErlyWeb ( http://erlyweb.org ) and Vimagi ( http://vimagi.com ) (which is built with ErlyWeb). Erlang is a lot of fun once you get past the initial hurdle.

I will try running the test after recompiling without HiPE and see what difference it makes.

Doing this gives him another advantage over competitors: he's getting feedback from users that his competitors aren't. This lets him plan the next step better than someone who's just copying his existing idea.

It doesn't write itself. Mnesia is a distributed database. When you use it you get distribution for free.

The main difference in effort between a Scala/lift and Erlang/ErlyWeb implementation is that making the Erlang app distributed and linearly scalable doesn't require any coding. Just store the process IDs in Mnesia and when you add more node

It seems like you've run into limitations in the frameworks you've used, not in the MVC pattern itself. In ErlyWeb (which I created, so I'm biased -- but not too biased), components are implmeneted by a controller module and a view module.

The Erlang version is unnecessarily verbose (and also semantically different) because it uses 2 processes. It can be rewritten as Foo = fun(N) -> put(var, N), fun(X) -> V = get(var) + X, put(var, V), V end end. It's not as concise a

Marketplace popularity is often the product of luck and first mover's advantage rather than evolution (examples that come to mind: Windows, MySpace, etc.). By the way, I like C.

True. However, the reason Mnesia is better suited for in-RAM data sets is that its disk-only storage engine, dets, requires a potentially long repair process if the VM crashes and a dets table isn't closed properly. This could keep your tab

You can add table fragments to overcome this limitation. However, keep in mind that Mnesia isn't designed to store very large datasets. It works best with data sets that fit in RAM.
