I really didn't get on with aquamacs. It'll do your head in if you use emacs on other platforms. You can use other emacs builds on mac OS. I use Carbon Emacs. Emacs 23 has a native cocoa build now.

I used vim for over 12 years before switching to emacs. The thing that made me switch was looking at some insane vim-script to indent Python (or something like that - I don't rememember). I love emacs now. Yeah it takes ages to learn, movin

Something can't be "quite unique". It's unique or it isn't.

They say of the Mighty Mouse: "inexplicably copying the ThinkPad’s red nipple instead of using a scroll wheel" That's completely incorrect. The Mighty Mouse has a mini trackball, the trackpoint is a pressure-sensitive stick.

That looks very good. I really hope they become commercially available and commonplace.

Well if you want to try it out for a few minutes, as I guess most people on here will, it beats rebooting your PC (or figuring out how to even make it boot on a MacBook). It's not like it's full featured enough for daily use anyway. I can't

If someone can't grasp concepts as simple as those without "friendly metaphors", they're going to struggle with programming.

Interesting and impressive. The 64 bit floppy image runs fine under VirtualBox if you select a 64 bit OS.

Nobody is ever going to agree on this. Different things work for different people. Everyone's got their "I did this and lost loads of weight" or "this didn't work for me" story. Some form of exercise combined with less and better food is pr

Not really "advanced": most of this is pretty basic - includes cursor movement, searching as well as some more interesting stuff.

I've seen this kind of "desktop in a browser" thing before and it seems a bit daft to me (and it certainly isn't an operating system). There's so much scope for better metaphors than the "desktop" one. Google's apps are a good example of th

This really winds me up. Pro photographers seem to have a complete lack of understanding of competition. Their industry is becoming commoditised. The amateurs aren't going to go away, and they're going to produce better and better quality w

> One known fact is that Goldman was pulling down USD $100,000,000 per DAY in profits from their automated trading systems. That's a hundred million dollars. A day. I don't think that is a "known fact" at all. All I've found is "more th

Why do Goldman's profits have to be mentioned in so many articles about this "code theft"? Does the fact they've just made lots of money, regardless of what actually happened regarding this programmer, change the meaning of right and wrong?

The bit about VaR is inaccurate. VaR is not a measure of leverage, it's supposed to be the amount of money an institution may lose over n days with an x % probability. The increase in VaR could have come from changes in vol, the yield cu

It depends on distance. 1 mile, 6:30 min/mi, half marathon 7:40 min/mi. There's quite a good formula that Pete Riegel came up with to predict your speed over a certain distance: T2 = T1 x (D2/D1)^1.06. There's a caculator on this page: htt

I wouldn't say that forefoot landing (part of the POSE method) is strictly "better" - it's a hotly debated point. Many top runners do not run this way.
