Be careful with comparing real-life things and experiences with a (virtual) number on a screen, especially for children. I used to know an adult who only cared about that number going up, despite making more than a comfortable amount of mon

The instructions are from Synapse docs: https://element-hq.github.io/synapse/latest/setup/turn/cotur... Element (not ElementX), the official/preferred app, works with coturn for 1-on-1 calls. But El

After installing and configuring coturn, and then finding out that ElementX requires Element Call instead feels like a "fuck you" from developers.

I've been hosting Matrix Synapse and mautrix-WhatsApp bridge for many years. Due to WhatsApp changes, bridge has to be updated periodically (about 1-2 times a year IIRC), but it has worked pretty reliably otherwise.

Does this update break calls? I recently set up coturn along with Synapse, but found out that ElementX cannot call Element and now requires Element Call (whatever it is). As a small self-hoster, the pile of growing services (that I presume

I hosted Matrix Synapse for a few users and some bridges for many years, and I get some of the sentiment. Synapse is okay, and bridges were the main reason for me. Documentation for setup and configuration is good now. No built-in admin pa

Calling health insurance, retirement and paid leave "bloat" sounds like a satire of a 19th century factory/mine/sweatshop owner. Wow.

What Apple could have done, for sake of clarity, sanity, and good practice is to handle SMS using one app, and handle iMessage using another, *separate* app. The problem is not that iMessage exists, it's that it operates in opaque and

4.7GB is quite enough for a standalone Linux DVD (for devices that still have DVD drives). Plus some cool art. Might be a good idea to preserve a known-working distro for some old PC, especially for discontinued or less-used architectures.

A few months ago, there was an update that made the detection much stricter. I believe this was in part to detract people from posting false positives of rare birds to eBird.

Seek is impressive just for the sheer number of completely different things it could identify, from mosses to animals. I used it to find native and invasive plants in my garden.

AFAIK WhoBird uses the same model (or at least, also developed by Cornell), but for me, Merlin is still better at identifying multiple birds at once.

That would be fun to read. Did you get the gemini browser to work? AFAIK getting TLS working on old devices could be difficult.

Check out the simpler Internet through the gemini protocol [0]. It's lightweight on purpose, and the capsules (gemini "sites") are mostly text. There are aggregators [1] and even search [2]. 0: https://geminiprotoc

IIRC there was a brief VR spike around early 2000s. I remember trying out Duke Nukem in a helmet and a three-button controller. And then a bit later, there were 3D glasses, ones that synchronized with the high-rate monitor to show each eye

This is neat, definitely works for finding feeds on more busy / obscured / ad-covered sites, such as news. I see that main part of the code is in JS anyway. Perhaps a fully-local bookmarklet would work even better, without having

Fun fact: such "purples" exist for other species. There was a study that found that hummingbirds are more attracted to a color that is a mix of green and ultraviolet (imperceptible to humans, but similar to our concept of "pu

Several years ago, Riot.im messenger had a branch called RiotX with some additional features. Then RiotX (or its codebase) became the first version of Element, while the original Riot.im stopped being supported. And this was when Synapse wa

This sounds great for large and corporate servers, but a pain for small self-hosted ones. More configuration and external dependencies. Plus additional confusion for non-techy users on those smaller servers.

Nice writeup. Was this built to be used with multiple devices? IIRC at least older jailbroken iDevices let you modify /etc/hosts, which you can use for the same purpose of blocking specific sites.
