Related: "flammable" and "inflammable". Either means that the object in question can be set on fire. The second word is an abomination that should never, ever, ever appear on warning labels. However minor an abomination it may be, it is an

Wow. I'd heard about this, but I had no idea it had made so much headway. From the website: "The National Popular Vote law has been enacted by states possessing 132 electoral votes — 49% of the 270 electoral votes needed to activate it." Fr

Small comment: I dunno about wheeled animals having mobility superior to that of legged animals. How much naturally-occurring flat terrain is out there? How well can wheels drive over rough terrain?

I've heard that Steve Jobs hated Flash (or Adobe). Whatever his reasons were, a techie's opinion maybe did help bring Flash down a few notches.

I doubt it. If you don't ban monopoly power, people sometimes get it (like Rockefeller sort of did). You don't get all of the nice properties of free markets unless some conditions are met, like the absence of monopolies. Edit: That being s

Github is maybe lacking for a semi-major free software project looking to create a web presence. It does have source hosting, projects pages, and a bug-tracking system, but it doesn't let you upload builds for downloading any more (without

You know, that might actually be a good idea. Sounding more hip (without sounding stupid) could actually help. gnu.org could also use some serious redesign. Brand is important. Also, fsf.org doesn't immediately scream at you what the FSF i

The cryptographic thing might be a good idea, but we would need to consider not only current computers' ability to crack it but also future computers' ability to crack it. Much faster computers will probably get here eventually.

One possible backup would be Bitbucket ( https://bitbucket.orghttps://bitbucket.org/ ). (I'm not affiliated Bitbucket in any way. I don't profit from them doing well, aside from them sticking around to keep providing free hosting for me.)

Is "jotdot@somedomain.com." actually invalid? My understanding is that something like "example.com." represents the same domain name as "example.com" does. I don't know if things work differently for email addresses, though.

Sounds like a good plan. There's probably more that needs to change than just the length of copyright terms. Registration should perhaps be required to get copyright. I don't know if having copyright at all is a net benefit. Whatever is b

I'm not sure that base 10 is wired into our brains. It's probably the case that we're just used to base 10. The reason why it's can be so hard to read numbers in base 8 or some other base out loud is that you have to convert it to base 10

Well, we can at least try to do something. If we could get millions of Americans to do this (though that seems a little far fetched . . .), it could make a difference. We have to fight back.

If each congressman got enough letters, we could see some response. I don't know if we can get that many, but we can try . . . Snarfy wrote that "even all of hacker news combined" wouldn't do it; I'll post this on Reddit, too.
