QoS is sort of a last resort, since it works by basically breaking TCP intermittently (dropping ACK segments). Any time you can throttle further up the stack is ideal.

Honestly, not such a bad thing. Routers are normally located far from the ideal location in most houses/apartments for good wireless coverage. Usually in the corner of the basement where the coax/fibre/phone lines come in, no

Yeah, very true, I missed that the first time I opened the page. Honestly that makes this idea even more insane. Jet engines are hundreds or thousands of times more fuel efficient than rocket engines, can run for days at a time, and most im

Has anybody even demonstrated a mach-9 air-breathing vehicle of any kind that has gone this distance? Afaik, the only things that go this fast are ICBM warheads and gliders. The only thing that comes close would be the X-15, but that was po

I can't speak on the relationship between FAA & Spacex, but I can't imagine it's great considering the public statements that have been made (ie. Twitter). But, FAA takes safety incredibly seriously. Range safety is top p

Yeah, I'd be interested to see what's _inside_ the request, not just that it was made. Was it a connectivity self-test or empty GET request? That's not ideal, but fairly benign. Or was it a "phone home" reporting th

That's very common with stateful applications. Lots of people use HAProxy or other application-aware LB's to keep the sessions "sticky" to a single app server. https://www.haproxy.com/blog/enable-sti

I love the line of thinking that police can "prevent" or "stop" crime as anything other than a deterrent. One of the "lies to children" we repeat over and over. Policing is entirely reactive, responding and arr

A lot of cheap LED retrofits on older halogen headlights do this. The only thing worse than being tailgated by a F-150 with ultra-blaster highbeams is an old junker with cheap flickering LEDs. I've even noticed a lot of DRLs flickering

The scale of hydropower in QC is absolutely staggering. Even decades after the last major dam was finished, they still get >90% of their power from hydroelectric with very little other sources. Fun fact, the dam reservoirs are so large t

Linux generally gets very squirrely when it's in a low-memory state. I think it's a bit safer to turn swappiness down and use a small swapfile and/or zram just to keep it from getting completely bricked up. That way you'
