You're welcome! as well as mendelk and ahurmazda below -- glad you all found it useful (and my self-promotion wasnt too annoying) :D

Shameless self promotion: http://pcottle.github.io/learnGitBranching/?demo I found the try.github.io tutorial very underwhelming -- it emulates enough of git to just fall into the uncanny valley. I also prefer visual l

Hey everyone -- sorry to hijack the top thread but I’m an ads engineer at Facebook so I feel qualified to respond. I posted this over on reddit too but it's still pending approval. In the case of this ad — I think we actually delivered

Not to mention the complete lack of conversion tracking. He's measuring success of the mobile app ad by monitoring game activity WoW which is laughably unscientific. Facebook supports conversion pixels as well, so conversions through h

Thanks for the feedback asciimo -- there are definitely some tough UX challenges with this type of app. Some comments: 0) you should only get one dialog with the link above, and that's the dialog that shows the new levels 1) the avalan

True, although ideally reflog is just a backup in case you make a mistake (and not an integrated part of your workflow). What I've found surprising is just how different workflows can be from project to project (or company to company).

No this is totally fine. I'd say the slightly more rare thing about this workflow is the fact that you squash multiple commits for a feature together. At least at larger companies it's nice to maintain a series of commits that lea

Thanks Joe, took me a while since some of the remote commands get some obscure / complicated. And testing them means setting up random repros and pushing / pulling. The two highlights for me are that "git fetch origin :foo&qu

Thanks Alex! I'm working on some lessons around push / pull / rebase right now that I think will be super helpful for learning the next steps. Progress has slowed a bit since work has ramped up, but now that intern season is

Most likely a custom algorithm -- I had to make my own for LearnGitBranching since most tree algorithms don't exactly fit the needs of a VCS visualization. Imagine the author did the same, but its all open source

Some programmers on 4chan came up with a "Sleep sort" algorithm and then proceeded to optimize it, complete with example code: http://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1295544154 It essentially spawns a new thread

I agree -- I'd rather come back every ~6 months with big updates rather than have the link submitted constantly. I'm always planning to submit it myself when I reach a big milestone but someone always beats me to it... it gets a f

git checkout -b will make the branch and check it out at the same time. You can always use "show solution" to see what we are using as the benchmark. Command discovery is a bit hard to communicate in this app -- I added the helper

A lot of people pay for LinkedIn... Regardless, why is this such a common response to these types of posts? I understand the angle of "don't be entitled to a free service," but there's also the alternative interpretation of "here are some f

If Google Adwords allowed images, I doubt they'd let advertisers use 960px-tall face shots of Larry and Sergey to promote their political angle. It's just not classy advertising, in addition to being confusing to users.

Thank god! I copy pasta code all day long and this is exactly what I need. I heard if you don't repeat yourself then you don't run into this kind of thing, but agile startup nodejs ninjas have no time for that

I'm using browserify[1] -- it's a great system because I can write all my code node-style, write tests that run in pure node, and then wrap all my resources for the browser! Grunt is the actual tool that I use to manage the build (it also h

I'd be really disappointed if someone added one level and started selling a zip file of the application to enterprises for $400 a pop. That being said, I've heard the GNU license is sometimes too prohibitive (albeit no definitive examples).

I'll be honest -- that was hard to understand. I don't know the low-level plumbing of git very well, which is why I made a higher level tool like this. Do you think it's important for beginners to understand all these subtleties? I think I

Ah!! I just realized people were clicking on those silly little buttons I had on the top... I totally added them simply for design flair. For now I'll add a nasty alert that they don't actually work, but eventually it would be cool to bind
