Yes, indeed - but the code was not meant to be an actual implementation, just a (bad) minimalistic example.

This is very inaccurate/misleading IMHO. Big Data is something which does not fit in a regular machine for a given operation. You can sort billions of records on an iPhone, for example. You can grep a string within a terabyte-file data

I believe this has to do with performances - ie. performing in few milliseconds rather than in tens/hundreds of milliseconds (at least that's what their benchmarks claim: http://blog.algolia.com/full-text-search-in

"utf8" in mysql is limited to 16-bit range (!) ; see http://golem.ph.utexas.edu/~distler/blog/archives/002539.htm... - basically, you need to use "utf8mb4" ( http://dev.mysql.com

AFAIK, stl (and beyond that, C++) throw exceptions especially in case of allocation failure (ie. new or push_back() failing to allocate memory), and more generally in case of programming errors (out_of_range, bad_cast etc.), and I am 100% o

Hmmm, to be honest I wish I had the time, and more than that, the courage , to cleanup the code (and this would include major refactoring and redesign). The project is now 15 years old (D'oh!), and was not aimed to live more than six

Binary size! (in my base separated .dbg files were HUGE, compared to the .so files). I don't think it has any impact on performances however (especially as the debug information is put in a separate ELF section, either in a separate fi

Isn't -g3 sufficient ? ("Level 3 includes extra information, such as all the macro definitions present in the program. Some debuggers support macro expansion when you use -g3."). [Note: I found -g3 to be extremely costly, but

-Werror is debatable. On a controlled build environment (with fixed GCC version and fixed distribution), I am convinced this is the way to go. After careful reviews, -Wno-xxx switches can be added on demand (such as -Wno-overlength-strings,

The -ansi switch is used, and imply -std=c90 for C and -std=c++98 for C++. But an explicit -std might be better, I suppose.

Our experience is that it is actually an excellent sanitary decision. We are using multiple builders with fixed GCC releases (for RHEL5, RHEL6 etc. flavors), and yes it means fixing additional warnings when we have to introduce a new archit

Yes, and this is actually a sane coding rule. Without it, badly written macros (using several ;-separated lines for example) will cause subtle bugs like this one.

In C, at least, compared to the commented out version or removed (when using versionning) variant, the code is still present and builds (and will break upon API change, guaranteeing it to be up-to-date), is present when re-factoring (not ne
