You're asking the right questions. The impact of AI continuing on the trajectory it's been on for the past 2 years is immense. It is anyone's guess if some limit will be hit.

Yes. Open weights are great and are a good option to hosted models under the right circumstances. I'm glad that China releases open weight models (which in some cases are sort-of be distilled versions of hosted US models).

A little terrified to speculate what a coding agent that stuck to this persona would produce (a $550/month multi-region AWS multi-region Webpack/Mongo/React stack ... for one user)

Is "taboo" the right word? "taboo" = "banned on grounds of morality or taste". Not sending data to known IP thieves, state actors, and competitors in China (or Russia or Israel) seems very rational.

You might be thinking too near-term. If a sufficiently advanced coding agent has read all the language specs, all the code, all the software engineering/architecture books, and all of human knowledge along with it, why would it need an

Completely forgot that Meta was doing AI (and certainly spending billions doing so). They've got a lot of money, but are far behind on experience, talent, technology, and infrastructure.

Spindrift. Not pure water, but greatly improves by having just a little real fruit juice and being lighter on bubbles.

Cool. I'm already using cygwin for a lot of these utilities. Would the Microsoft versions have any advantages?

How is this different than a cornfield? A data center is probably a better neighbor because it doesn't kick up dirt, pesticides, and fertilizer into the air.

Great summary. I find image and video generation models are a more understandable reality check for how close local models are to frontier models.

We're hitting the atomic limits of what's possible with minimum feature size in silicon. It's also very hard to remove 1 kW of heat from a laptop, let alone do it quietly or on battery.

Agree. If you can't explain it to someone else, you don't really understand it yourself. These people are practitioners not experts.

Overall I agree with this, though I do think that there will be a trend to hoard/keep-secret domain knowledge by professions. Like plumbers will try and make it a trade-secret or protected intellectual property how to change a pipe fit
