Yeah - I'm backing the patreon and very excited for this work. I don't need it often, but when I do, being able to boot natively into Linux is tremendously useful.

It's no Cyberpunk 2077, but I recently played through Control on medium-ish detail on the AMD GPU on my 4 year old Macbook Pro (in Bootcamp, obviously). It managed around ~50 FPS most of the time, only very occasionally dropping a litt

Untrue, Apple does permit you to replace your kernel on Apple Silicon macs. Hector Martin has a Patreon where you can sponsor and follow his work towards making Linux usable on these systems: https://www.patreon.com/marcan

I have encountered the same problem with the tunnelbana in Stockholm. Normally I use a card, but on a few occasions I have left it at home or forgotten to top it up, and bought a ticket with the app. When it wasn't scanning and I took

With sufficient memory barriers, the x86 memory model can be emulated entirely in software without having to sacrifice multithreading. I expect a year from now we will be able to run x86 Windows on our AS Macs at reasonable-ish speeds this

Shit like this makes me feel a lot less guilty about my own environmental impact of getting a new phone every 1-2 years and a new laptop every 3.

Aside - calling it now - but the M1's x86 memory model mode is a temporary thing that'll go away in a few years along with Rosetta 2 once Apple is happy with the level of universal binary support.

I've moved all of my side project dev to a M1-based mini with 16GB. It's still lacking docker+virtualisation support, which is a bit of a headache, but I'm confident that'll be resolved soon. Other than that, everything

My take would be that once you need another environment than staging+prod, that's the time to move to at the very least move to containers, and probably think very hard about either a hosted Kubernetes or something like Fargate.

Totally agree with this post. I use WSL1 quite a bit, and it brings many of the things I love about working on the mac to Windows. I do hope MS does continue to support it as promised.
