Energy. Fossil fuels are finite and are getting expensive to extract. Fission is a good stop-gap, but again finite. Breeder reactors are supposed to help with that, but they don't exist yet. Renewable options are limited to geothermal

Every peer to peer system requires bootstrapping, often this is achieved with some central or federated nodes/trackers. Once you have peers, you can forget about trackers and use the DHT.

I'm not criticizing the project or the personal enjoyment you derive from working on it. Keep it up. Not everyone wants to make it a fight, and I respect that. Personally, I live for the struggle.

That's a fine reason to use an alternative social network, but building these things doesn't solve the larger problem in a way that is meaningfully competitive. GNUSocial has been around for ages, but you don't see anyone scr

Why do we keep building centralized "decentralized" services to replace entrenched centralized providers? What hope of victory is there against the Twitters and Facebooks of the world? They already own that space! They aren't

Mesh networking has captured a lot of my attention lately. It isn't that new, but it isn't exactly available to people. Given that we overcome some of the existing challenges with meshes, we could have deep Internet penetrantion w

Are we at the point where corporations can have private militias? I'm really impressed at how committed we are to acting out a cyberpunk novel. I'd say the best thing would be to maintain elephant populations domestically on wildl

True, but it is a good sign that people are willing to do that to drive a good electric car. Tesla is going to make a killing whenever the Model 3 happens. I'm especially excited to see the other auto manufacturers responses. I'd

A lot of the people I know in tech do these types of activities. Those who don't typically belong to an older crowd. Perhaps my cohort is bringing along a cultural change? I'm fairly new to the industry, so I might be talking out

You are measuring things too. If there wasn't a physical phenomena happening you wouldn't experience anything! You are using different tools, but you are doing the same thing as us "reductionist westerners".

I'm (very slowly) working towards having time to build the hobby OS I've been dreaming about for years. I've been especially inspired by Plan 9, BeOS, and seL4. I love simple, powerful things.

That's not the same as building a publishing operation and creating new copies of the items in their catalog for anyone who wants one. Lending doesn't create new copies. Personally, I think IP is nonsense, but a lot of people disa

No, its their fault as executives. Secure systems are expensive and they take time to build properly, which is fully at odds with, "I need this done yesterday". Unfortunately (for them), since they cut the checks, the also get wha
