We know more now. We can better tease out causes of symptoms. For example, generosity is not the same as people pleasing. They can look the same, but one is born of love and one is born of fear. We generally want to help people experience

As a manager I’m going thru performance management myself. It’s a hard experience. What I learned is: you need to hold a high bar, because people can do anything to keep their job, and often not what you want them to do What you want is som

Yes, but overall job ads are up. Pay is going up. But specifically entry level is down significantly since Nov 2022. All of your points - interest rates, post pandemic hiring boom would apply to market as a whole. Not saying it’s causation

why is it surprising that Waymo costs more, and people pay anyway? Waymo is prioritizing safety over all things and is in gradual roll out mode. The easiest way to contain demand is to raise prices. and...what's not to love about ridi

Shh! We can’t do that! You’d piss off the republican donors. Not to mention the American public when their grocery bill significantly increases. No, it’s much better to go harass people who aren’t in republican circles. Us vs them. Round u

Bug bounty program appears to be an efficient spend. For a few thousand dollars they mobilize unpaid people looking for extreme edge cases and then surface these issues. It would’ve cost way more to pay an employee to search for this.

the idea is that normal business expense are deductible. in this case, your taxable income is $1.0M, and cash flow is $500k ($1.5M - $500k salaries - $500k taxes). now you have to amoritize it over 5 years. so your taxable income is $1.4M

I did this once. I was a RA, and there must've been at least 6 mini fridges left behind. I was staying for the summer, so I cleaned the ones that were salvageable and sold them on Craigslist. Earned some easy beer money.

Weeeell let’s see what that translates to today. Assuming 30k houses for 100,000 people this effort would have budgeted… $77k per house in today’s dollars. record stops The median home today is $350k-ish. Whoops, Congress better be prepa

Could be interesting. My main fear would be a wider variability in behavior, reducing effectiveness. Currently there are incentives against representatives acting too much like assholes - they would lose the support of their political party

I thought of that article too, but these letters are not really regret filled. For the most part, they knew what they were doing and ready for the consequences. Rather, they're grieving and saying goodbye to loved ones. And the author
