I'm not putting steaming poo on my badge, it's the concept of customization that's easily shared- "For the social let's all use our lab's logo, and tonight we can use our student org's logo, and tomorrow f

It's not just paper, perhaps at least run the numbers? Though I completely agree it's likely more environmentally costly. My initial thought process evolved from coming back from yet another conference, and tossing yet another lan

This! Now make them required at conferences (easily done because professional societies), someone sell the service. We have to pay $600 just to go to present our papers, make it cost less by $50 if you come with your own. I for one welcom

Cool. Badges, commemorative pins, small tradable items are mainstays at cons, conferences etc., their market doesn't need to be created, it's their to be fed. So make this type of thing work across time and you have created value

I completely agree. Thinking more along the lines of- whether or not something is better may not drive a market, people loved Tamagotchi but vanilla stuffed animals last generations... but Tamagotchi still work for many. Something that has

Nice. I've thought of various similar applications (probably because I saw such somewhere). For example conferences require lanyards with passes attached. Most contract with some company to handle all their creation, then also require

I mean what can possibly go wrong when a company that deprecates (and that's generous adjective) almost anything older than a couple years provides infrastucture for something that should last many decades? Edit - karma losing posts

Replace "Mushroom" with insects, fish, bacteria, and viruses, and many other branches of the network-of-life. Inventorying our Earth is far from done.

Just a thought experiment. I was implying that chess is a game, not a board. That game can be encoded/coded without any need for a Z variable, can't it? My Rook doesn't go up and down an ladder, it doesn't need a 3D arr

Natural history collections may still be interested in such. They merge the concept of needing small footprint size labels (e.g. 4 point Times) that go under the physical specimen. The label must not take a lot of space, so for 2mm long in

More species on HN! More shameless plugs. The nomenclature of these animals is curated in our open-source TaxonWorks. The result of that work is shared on a custom site via exports and post-processing https://www.wcolite.com/
