I was joking :-) I've made a few simple microcontrollers and microsequencers in Minecraft (as 'micro' as you can get with a 1M feature-size) and I've often fantasized about bigger projects, but it's only been fantas

You can implement any logic function with a large enough lookup table. That doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea. It wasn't done this way then and isn't done this way now not because it's impossible (or even t

I've never seen or heard of a non-industrial laser cutter with a gas supply. Air assist, yes (to clear smoke and particles from the beam and protect the focus lens from soot), but that's just an air pump, not a gas supply.

The CO2 laser tubes sold to hobbyists are sealed. There is no gas supply. Large industrial lasers use a gas supply in order to cut faster and at higher power. Some home-built tubes do use a gas supply, but virtually no one builds their ow

True of most of the Chinese 'manufacturers' (usually just encapsulators) I've bought from. Hoewever, there are reliable Chinese manufacturers that hit spec reliably. It's just hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.

GND and PROT are pins 31 and 32 on the same chip, right next to SCL and SDA on the 8356908. I don't know where PROT might be exposed on the top of the PCB, it very well might not be. I soldered leads directly to the chip to test.

To be fair, I cannot say with certainty why it works; I don't have code for the BIOS or EC. The CoreBoot and LibreBoot people might be able to shed some light. The more interesting aspect, verified by testing, is that it does work. In

I also said 'SCL to SDA does not work everywhere, whereas in testing, PROT to GND does'. PROT is not the WP pin. They're different. Go read the spec sheets. The original hack as discovered was PROT to GND, not SCL to SDA.

I'm not using the WP pin, I'm using the PROT pin. It forces the EEPROM to behave differently, because it signals it does not have a good power state. The EEPROM can be 'read', but the data it hands back is different. Y

They did as of Haswell. New machines are crackable too with more effort, but this simple short trick doesn't work. No, I don't know a trick for new machines, and am unlikely to look for one. Modern Thinkpads aren't machines

Correct. The HD password is a little closer to real security. My motivation here is the same as most people buying old Thinkpads off eBay-- getting past the SVP on machines with a dead CMOS battery. I don't give a fig about any data

Yes, but let's give this a little time. If this was going to be another example of 'the code is the spec' it wouldn't go far anyway. That's a n00b mistake, and I don't think these guys are n00bs. If this is w

Apple is one of the few vendors that supports AAC in exclusion of other formats (and, eg, ALAC in exclusion of FLAC, etc). And no, actually, AAC's declared licensing is considerably more expensive than mp3 (partly because AAC is a bund

Actually you mean exactly one player: iPod/iPhone. To play nicely with apple, you have to fork over the $2.50/copy. Ah well. (Almost everything else currently using stems is mogg-based given the per-unit royalties for MP4 softwa

Why define a new AAC subvariant and not use an existing (and actually unencumbered) multitrack stem format like mogg that's been around for for a decade now?

It's not obvious, but that's actually a real plot of a real signal example. Have a look in the source code for the cairo animations, it's generated from data. It was easier to use a real example than try to draw something by hand that was

The sad truth is that all the open source video editors are like that depending on what you're doing (with the possible exception of OpenShot, which I found to be reliable but limited). In short, I found no FOSS video editor that did what I

It was fun rebuilding that 3585. I had to wait almost six months for a working CRT that would fit that model to float past on eBay :-)
