I own a Nook. I don't know anyone with a Kindle, and one person with an iPad. I'm a 4th-year Software Engineering student at a pretty Linux-heavy university.

Really? In my (admittedly limited) experience, ant was much more of a PITA than things like Rake and Scons.

Python makes simple things hard. It also makes some slightly complicated things really easy, mostly by way of an incredibly extensive standard library. One line for a static webserver (python -m SimpleHTTPServer). Not that much more to e

Python is my language of choice for most things. That being said, it's not really a good choice for text processing (that is, using regular expressions) or glue scripts - I find Ruby to be an excellent successor to Perl for those. For anyt

Refactoring support has nothing to do with IDEs. Nothing. An IDE is, well, an integrated development environment - I find the idea of mashing my editor, VCS, build system, debugger, etc. into one tool to be incredibly distasteful. What

Really, it's about either maximizing freedom for users or maximizing freedom for developers. The GPL is for the former, while the WTFPL is for the latter. Regarding practicality, RMS claims that the GPL forces companies to open-source soft

It's also weird in most professions to work long and hard on something, only to give it away for free. I find that open-source advocates tend to be open-information advocates as well.

My university's chapter of ACM just puts on silly social events and sponsors talks that are high on marketing and low on tech. Anyone who really cares about the field has given up trying to deal with them and just made their own clubs. I r

I doubt that OS X has better driver support than Linux Apple knows exactly what hardware you're using if you buy a Mac, and thus are able to accomodate you quite nicely. This of course doesn't count peripherals, but it's still quite sign

What are you basing that claim on, just your own personal experience? It's a pretty extraordinarily claim to say that linux on the desktop requires no configuration, and I think such a claim deserves at least a little bit of evidence above

Alsa settings can be saved using `sudo alsactl store`; most distros have their startup scripts configured to load up the generated config file when they start.

So, if you want to communicate about type systems, your communication will contain less misunderstanding if you simply omit the words "strong" and "weak". Point taken.

You're assuming that the condition of "if" is necessarily a boolean. Indeed. Conditional branching generally needs a boolean value - do we go down this path or not? It's not clear that it is. It looks more like "is the value not an elem

VLC is by far the best Vid player out there Only if you aren't watching files with, say, ordered chapters, or comments inside the SSA files. Granted, that's most of the population, but there's a very particular dislike of VLC in the animu

The point I was attempting to make is that Java (and all other languages that I know of) are both strongly and weakly typed.

Everyone saying that there's no real definition of strong and weak typing always confuses me. In my view, strong typing prohibits implicit conversion between types, and weak typing allows it. This is, of course, a scale - for instance, Pyt

The problem is that you're using the wrong definition of "link". I also say "link $foo to $bar", but that puts it in the right order: I have a folder. I want to link that folder to some other name, over yonder. " ln -s foo bar". See?

Firefox 4 feels a lot faster to me, but try it for yourself: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/beta/ . RCs should be coming early next year, if you'd rather wait for a bit more stability.
