What I found interesting is that it doesn't use initramfs. Can someone elaborate on that? Is that something other distros should adopt?

That sounds much more like a description of compromise rather than consensus.

What I find interesting about `vim /path/to/file` is that it is neither document-centric nor application-centric. Or in a way it is both: You need to know which application you want to use, but you select the location of the

https://popcon.debian.org/ is an opt-in mechanism to measure the number of installs. Of course that is not the same as actual usage, but pretty close.

I know there was a warning in the beginning, but with my laptop the text was so small that it rendered the whole thing useless. Zooming didn't help either. I am sure this is great work but I just cannot access it.

Note on typography: I know this is very common in the US, but I just cannot get used to em-dashes without spaces around them. I tried for ~30secs to figure out what "circling-or" and "cyciling-the" might be, until I real

Tech companies complaining about developer shortages sounds completely tone deaf to me: During this pandemic, society was carried entirely by "essential workers", especially in health care. Those jobs are notoriously underpaid. Th

No, not exactly. It is the case when this data is related to a single person. E.g. "has this person subscribed to my newsletter" vs "whan has this person subscribed to my newsletter".

One important downside: Data protection. This approach of "store it now in case you might need it later" is in direct violation of the principle of data minimisation in GDPR.

For anyone proposing a replacement for xdg-open: It is already a wrapper around kde-open, dde-open, gvfs-open, gnome-open, mate-open, and exo-open. We already have a classic xkcd 927 situation.

I was deeply amused by the title. In my world using shell scripts to analyze access logs is the obvious solution and using google analytics is the exotic approach that you might come up with in very few special cases.

Especially when doing IT support, having docker on the machines is rather unlikely. This sounds like a good usecase for appimages.

As far as I understand "40" is just short for "3.40.0". The expectation is that they will remain compatible with the 3.x.x series for a long time, so the 3 is somewhat redundant. This release contains more UI changes tha

Interesting aside: Instant messaging on the desktop seems to be practically dead. The signal desktop client is only meant as a companion to the phone app. And now Snikket doesn't even list a desktop client. I still don't really un

I have been using the format used by gtimelog[1] for years. It has the benefit of adding one entry per line, so processing is extremely simple. [1]: https://github.com/gtimelog/gtimelog/blob/master/docs&#

I am wondering whether using AudioWorklets actually has any benefits in this case. AFAIU the benefit in general is that they run in the audio thread so the data does not need to be handed over to a different thread for processing. In this c

I work for an organization that sometimes receives sensitive data. We support PGP email (among other options). It s not used that much, but I think it is important to at least offer it. "be liberal in what you accept".
