I've heard about some efforts to regreen the desert by careful planting and geoforming. Anyone know anything about this? It would be cool if it could work, even partially.

This is a solid point. I was at Mesa Verde, the national park with the cliff dwellings. Apparently the people who lived there just up and left, well before Columbus showed up on the other side of the continent. One theory is that the curren

There are many other sad stories like this. And this poor kid has started working for the Stanford Internet Observatory, one of the biggest censors of the Internet. It's sad that this is going on at an institution of higher learning.

Personally I'm a bit skeptical of this. Just right off the bat, it's easy to find research that shows how the Native Americans in California used wild fire to open up farming land. And there are the Native Americans who would driv

We actually can't. Russia and in particular Stalin was also there. Russia absorbed more Polish acreage than the Germans. I'm happy to agree with the phrase, "Germany and Russia, acting together, started WWII."

It's not so much the chromebooks that won over education. It's the Google Docs workspace which is relatively simple for schools to use.

Absolutely. Everyone in my office is pretty considerate, but all it takes is one pair of people in the bullpen and the quiet is gone. We all get to listen to the discussion. When I first joined, I learned a ton by eavesdropping. Now it just

One compromise is to hold the cash in US TIPs, i.e. inflation indexed bonds. There's a limit of how much you can buy each year and the interface is quite clunky, but these bonds should protect against inflation. (Note: inflation as mea

Yes. Seriously. How many extra carbs do you burn to walk a mile? Those end up in the atmosphere as CO2. There's no free lunch, so to speak. Given that animals aren't super efficient already, I wouldn't be surprised to learn t

Are you so sure? How much CO2 does a human put out to walk a mile? As it is, I only compared them to other vehicles. It's not really fair to compare them to walking which is much slower and often impossible for the less than fit.
