While I sort of share this sentiment, it fails to acknowledge that BC mining is potentially a better use of our CPU cycles than feeding morally dubious ad networks. As long as someone is upfront about the whole thing, I would honestly not m

Alternatively, you could use an alias: # .bashrc alias bc='bc --mathlib' and a .bcrc file: # .bcrc scale = 4 Actually, this is what my .bcrc looks like: scale = 39 k_c = 299792458

While we're on the rational point, I personally take inspiration from Bayes Law---A gender gap is weak evidence for sexist practices. All else equal, sexists worlds are more likely to produce gender gaps than non-sexist ones. To me,

Thanks for the positive feedback! It's really encouraging. I've opened elinks here and there in the past, but have never really given it a fair chance. You've motivated me. At the moment I run almost completely in a browser c

Running in a VM is a reasonable idea. Though part of my reason for wanting to run a microkernel is as a quest to run as minimal hardware + software as possibly without cramping usability (for appropriate meanings of "usability").

I don't really have a good technical reason. Mainly just curiosity. Over the course of the years of me tinkering, I seem to keep trimming my tools to slimmer and slimmer things that I feel I can grok fully. This has me at the point whe

Interesting. I my knowledge of hypervisors and virtualization is quite superficial. What makes Xen so bloated? The seL4 kernel has piqued my interest a lot. Though, shamefully, I have to admit the interest isn't backed by many technica

Cool! You're a Hurder! Don't bump into Hurd devs all that often :P I'm kind of sad the L4 port didn't take. The desire to hack on something like that definitely mulls around in the back of my mind. As for the hypervisor

Well, Bayes theorem should let us, in theory, combine several small studies into the equivalent of one larger one. I'm practice it's harder than simple number crunching due to methodological differences between studies, but it see

Would you mind sharing your reasons for being a btrfs anti-fan? I decided to go with btrfs on my work and personal computers a couple years back and haven't really had to battle it. Just curious of your thoughts more than anything.

The large primes themselves don't have much use as far as I am aware, but the methods and tools developed to find them have apparently been quite helpful in other fields. This is much the same argument for why the LHC is a good idea. T

I don't think it has to be one or the other. Myself, I often get confused by top-down approaches because I obsessively ask about "what's underneath" and feel disoriented by arbitrary-seeming machinery. Friends of mine on

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. It's pure research, and String Theory has pioneered a lot of new ideas that have successfully cross-pollinated into other fields. Even the LHC employs String Theorists with good reason. Seems a mis

AFAIK, gobo "just" redefines the directory hierarchy along with a small kernel patch that lets you see an equivalent standard hierarchy. It has none of of the architecture for build reproducibility that nixos and guix boast.

I read somewhere about a person wanting to understand git, so they made .git itself into a repo and watched what changed as they used git normally. Thought that was pretty clever.
