This isn't a meaningful observation or anything, but you used both "emojis" and "emoji" as the plural of "emoji". My brain tripped over that for some reason.

Ahhh... The delicious taste of technically correct. I actually find 11 gigahumans surprisingly low. Unbounded exponential growth would suggest something more like 30 or 40 billion. Clearly that can't go on forever, but exactly what eff

Actually, it's good you present this. A major difference between your comment here and Linus' rant is that Linus didn't deliver personal attacks. Notice how all his vitriol is aimed at the code and not the person: "Sto

That sounds like a horrendously selfish attitude. The problem was fixed; nobody was harmed; lessons were learned. The sum total of effect of this "Linus tirade" seems overwhelmingly positive. But just because he didn't confor

Hah. I know very little about containers beyond the unshare command and have been wondering how they avoid reintroducing all the problems of static binaries. Makes me think of stali [0], the static linux distro that avoids all dynamic linki

I know very little about hardware security. What are some of the issues that HSMs address that make R&D so challenging?

"I disagree with this..." This is totally of topic, but it kind of weirds me to see this kind of response so often. I just don't get the impetus to sort things into Agree vs. Disagree bins. Naively, we're all working wit

I keep a virtual server for precisely this reason. All my docs sit in a git repo and sync to the server. It even works for binary stuff with git-annex! I know this kind of thing isn't for everyone, but I love it.

This URL only loads a blank white page for me. It's probably because I keep JS disabled, but I really wish sites would degrade more sensibly. If you absolutely require JS for the content, I understand, but please display some minimal p

Interesting. Or put more tersely, Let O be an open set in R^n. There exists a smooth function f: R^n -> R with support cl(O). Off the cuff, I'd try proving this by covering O with bump functions and trying to glue those together. I&

Oh. I'm happy someone brought this up! For anyone interested, Anders Kock has a nice slim-but-dense book on the subject entitled "Synthetic Differential Geometry" [0]. Kock even offers a PDF of an older version [1] on his sit

Whoa. That sounds divine. Not trying to start a war here, but is there a way to do this kind of thing in vim? I've heard about evil move and spacemacs but never looked into either all that much.

“What truly infinite objects exist in the real world?” I'm not sure what "infinite object" means, but I do find it interesting that we can do the math anyway using only a finite number of symbols.

Well, in practice we can't really confirm a theory so much as "fail to reject" it. There's a zoo of gravitation theories out there and this new data weeds out some of them. The problem I see with the "confirms GR&qu
