Duolingo isn't even language learning. It's closer to tiktok, it produces dopamine without actually teaching very much at all. Turns out that most consumers just want to feel like they're learning a language instead of doing

In Japan I could just drop my knife in a nearby house's box with $6, they'd sharpen it and phone me to pick it up within a few hours. Cheap enough that I never bothered to do it myself.

Yeah I appreciate that. There are things like vignetting that can help and newer games do them. But some people will never be able to play them.

Those games literally exist now. Almost all new VR games use free movement not teleportation. It is frustrating that you seem to be talking confidently when your knowledge is 5 years out of date.

Facebook made a very expensive new Batman game in VR, there's also Resident Evil, Assassin's Creed, a ton of other high budget games like Red Matter. It just isn't taking off. In my experience even though VR is unique and ama

This is such nonsense. The new Batman game on VR has full motion and smooth turning. It's not on rails at all. Games have got better at reducing motion sickness, and players also adapt over time.

They made quest 2 and 3. Despite their recent pushing of shitty horizon worlds, the hardware is extremely solid and affordable for VR.

How does that work? The Quest doesn't even require a Facebook account. They were decoupled in 2022.

You gain presets lol. And in the case of odyssei it has a ton of additional features including a sequencer and full effects bank! Experiences vary but sliding a slider on a screen is worth the benefits.

Yeah there is this big lie that most people work the same amount when they have a ton of distractions and can slack off whenever. Not my experience at all. Nobody wants to lose their WFH so everyone pretends productivity didn't change.

Their password manager is dead now... As is Send and Track, which allowed analytics like you describe.

I use obsidian mostly just for markdown and the tasks plugin but I can see how you could get caught up trying to create the perfect setup lol.

HN has plenty of neurodivergent people and not picking up on sarcasm (especially without any voice data) is an autistic trait. There is also a cultural element. Countries like the UK are used to deadpan where sarcasm is delivered in the sam

It makes so much sense but the UK is too risk averse to do this unfortunately. Multi month waiting lists for us

Obsidian is the best then, it's just text files. You can sync them anywhere or keep them local. It has plugins for todo and daily diaries etc.

Doesn't apply to UK. In the UK the NHS will pay for a private company so there is no reason to go private yourself. But they absolutely won't dispense medication without a diagnosis. And the waiting list is at least a few months,

My GP applied on my behalf. The queue in my area is more like 8 months though. You have to fill out a bunch of forms but importantly that's after you are in the waiting list.

I know someone who worked there and their job was helping customers load their data into it, often with strict security. It was pretty boring and then palantir just exposed a UI that joined that data and made it analysable and mappable.

I can confirm this. I passed N1 without learning to write. I later learned how to write all of the kanji, and all it does it help you distinguish very similar kanji without context. I tried learning all the compound words (i.e. which kanji

Many people used Arch for its status as "the pro Linux distribution" i.e. not beginner friendly, but secretly still easy enough that you don't need much effort. That's how "I use Arch btw" became a meme. These

Have you used them? Perl has version tags in source code and everything is feature gated including the stdlib. Python does none of that. The stdlib changes constantly and just looking at source code gives you no indication if you can run it

Hording behaviour doesn't really apply digitally. It's not like it's physical magazines or VHS. It's just bytes and bytes are incredibly cheap. It's also easier to move, delete or search. And even if you don't

It's usually copyright. A large percentage of videos on YouTube are infringing copyright but nobody has noticed or got around to deleting them yet.

Most of it was written without LLMs for that reason, but now Ladybird is its own project, the NIH focus has largely gone away. They are using a lot of third party code now. Their mission is compete with Chrome, not be 100% NIH.
