I hope by "their" you mean "MIT's", not "MIT media lab's". MIT media lab wasn't particular responsible for the Aaron Swartz situation.

in English, comma separated lists of adjectives or other descriptors are almost always understood to have AND between them, not OR. OR must be explicit, otherwise AND is implicitly assumed. This is not just a matter of two equally valid alt

You are missing the point: there's an entire field of study about the claim and the various ways that it's true. The wikipedia article is about that field of study. Hence, the only way the claim would be false would be if that ent

That still doesn't make sense. They take it is a forgone conclusion that volume increases will _eventually_ result in cognitive benefits, but provide no evidence or sources to support that notion. Of course, it seems to intuitively mak

ex-theoretical physicist here. I read Terry's post and I totally saw your point about "Notation^{-1}(C)" being more wit than clarity. Of course, I also share your respect and appreciation for Tao.

I won't comment on the rest of your post, but I'd like to point out that there's no evidence Ben Franklin said that. That quote is commonly misattributed to Churchill, but that seems to also be a misattribution [1]. [1] http

There's a strange point that is made on page 771. Toward the bottom of the page, it says: Such a conclusion would be wrong.² The "conclusion" being that doctors want to minimize both false positives and false negatives. Th

I did my PhD in theoretical physics, and part of my thesis was on nonlinear eigenvalue problems in PDEs. I wasn't aware of the connection; though I guess it really depends on what you mean by "it's well known".

I don't actually think it is that well-known, you were completely right to point out. Also, I suspect the "dynamical systems" wikipedia page is completely irrelevant.
