Couldn't agree with you more. If you're a mechanic, you don't brag about calling the AA to home-start your wheels. You would be pretty shocked to see a mechanic post a story about his home-start on a hobby enthusiasts news site and see the

The down votes seem to imply that I'm wrong. Please could someone enlighten me as to why I'm out of line here. Yeah, sure this guy calls himself a "Security Evangelist" but this has absolutely nothing to do with his skill set being used a

This article seems to imply this "hacker" used some actual skill set to retrieve their stolen goods. Installing tracking software on a mac and then bragging about it when stolen and then found doesn't fit with what I'd call being a hacker.

They're not injecting HIV into people. As far as I can make out, they are using a modified version of HIV to modify white blood cells which they then inject into the patient.

The HIV is used to modify white blood cells .. so I'd wager harmless as they are not putting the HIV into the patient. This is why I changed the title after a little nudge, to avoid people getting the wrong end of the stick.

I thought that as well. Each question would need a good degree of context.

In simple social situations that may be true. But not being able to grasp the basics of language will have an effect on how someone communicates complicated thoughts and ideas. How would you expect someone taking on a programming challenge

I don't think it's really about being smart. Having a basic grasp of language so you can adequately articulate yourself in a conversation is critical to discussion. If you can't, then you probably shouldn't be taking part in the discussio

Love the idea, but wouldn't it be simpler and more effective to just have them fill in the missing word without the images.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel these "please hire me" news stories are irrelevant on a site that is centered around people starting their own companies? Still, I wish him the best of luck.

If by x you mean performing a string operation and copying the result to memory .. I still fail to see how allocating and deallocating memory on each iteration is a fair comparison, it's not something I'd expect a competent C developer to

I'm looking at it from the angle of someone that has spent over a decade in and out of C. The code in the loop is in NO way an "artifact", it's absolutely critical to the comparison. My example in no way removes the essence, especially if

Why would you assume the need to deallocate in the loop? Reuse of an already allocated memory location is C optimisation 101.

I guess the real problem is that the example serves no real world purpose and can very easily be biased. See my response to scott_s below.

So why not simply do: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main() { int i = 0; char *x = malloc(44 * sizeof(char)); for (i = 0; i < 10000000; i++) { sprintf(x, "%d %d", i, i); } fr

Oh and does anyone else think the malloc example in comparison to actual garbage collection is incredibly unfair?

I'm no python developer but this: def main(): for i in xrange(10000000): "%d %d" % (i, i) main() Does't seem to be copying the result anywhere. Where as the C example is copying the result to memory .. which would expla
