The more experienced I become, the more such down to earth solutions seem OMG SO MUCH MORE reasonable than all the bells and whistles of "modern" engineering practices.

The harsh truth: there's too much in this position to be handled by a single person. Ideally, you'd want a single person with a great tech background, solid product understanding and all the additional soft skills in between. Thes

Wholeheartedly agree. Graph theory is probably one of the most relatable, accessible theories available. It is a fantastic tool to discover algorithmics, as you can visually apply your thinking. FWIW, I personally wrote my master thesis on

I have some rather complex technical documentation and guides to write, and this strikes me as the perfect tool for this purpose. I'm starting over tomorrow.

Same for me. I will add to this that probably very few know how to implement GraphQL on the server-side *efficiently*, or, put differently, most have a gut feeling about how hard to manage it can become. While frontend implementations look

I fully agree on the analysis. I can't say I'd have done a better job at phrasing, but I would have emphasized on the balance between business and contributions, rather than (from my reading) insisting on the business implications

That's the answer. It encompasses every aspect: familiarity, usability, low learning curve, low time to market, enablement, and, eventually, greater margins.

Thanks for the honest story, congrats on pulling yourself out of debt and into (quoting you) privileged life. I see the HN crowd as rather monotonic, and thanks to stories like yours, it shows me wrong, and that’s for the best.

Estimates are here to fail, but they're nonetheless crucial: * set an estimate, you'll deliver in 1.5x your estimate * don't set an estimate, you're losing total control over delivery (rarely for the better, even though
