I think it's inherent that every economy needs a number of "lower-tier" employment opportunities for the "upper-tier" to exist and function well. And until robotization becomes viable and accepted, this will continu

I haven't, but would to give it a shot in the future. I feel like it would be a hassle to convert books that aren't already ePub/(insert DRM format here) though. Do you find this to be a problem?

It may not be as actively developed as something like Node, but people are still submitting PRs and the original author is still making updates.

Yet another project moved from Google Code to GitHub. Is there any reason why Google isn't trying to use Google Code to compete with GitHub? Seems like it wouldn't require many more resources, and could give GH a run for its money

I believe this is the case also. There is a Quora thread on the pros and cons on raising kids in the bay area[1]. [1] http://www.quora.com/Is-Silicon-Valley-a-good-place-to-raise...

Mabye it's just the culture of the company, because the company still feels new tech (although it's old). I hesitated to put Braintree on here for the same reason (and because it was acq. by PayPal)

Maybe it's just me, but I see sooo many HR/Marketing/Finance startups in Chicago and they are all kinda boring to me because they are all approaching very similar problems. Didn't know about Bikespike, looks cool!

Not a big fan of the list, as they left out some great companies. Some of my favorite Chicago startups: 1. TempoDB - Database for IOT and sensor data 2. 640 Labs - Precision agriculutre platform 3. Opternative - Online Eye Exams 4. ShipBob

Super uninspiring list for me also. And the only YC company ever in Chicago wasn't even included.

Yup. Also because Joyent asked that Node Forward not use the "node" term, even though it was in public domain a lot longet than Joyent's been around.

I though the whole point of io.js was that they would work on the project faster than Node, but eventually merge back into Node once Joyent became more transparent. The Node release cycle was pretty slow and they had some dispute with the c

I would guess so. There are tons of startups out there, you just have to find one. Try Angelist[1] or Crunchbase[2] and you should be able to find something. If not, contract work isn't bad either. [1] http://angel.co [2]

Sadly, most of the startups are finance/marketing/hr-focused. I haven't seen many other large startups outside that. Ones that come to mind are TempoDB, BellyCard, ShipBob, Raise, ParkWhiz, and SpotHero.

Chicago is pretty segregated as whole. The North side is predominantly Caucasian and the south side (save for a few neighborhoods) is predominantly African-American and Latino.
