Speculators will eventually mark to market and sell or rent their empty houses. It might take a while, but it's a big country. Housing is illiquid on a small scale, but is a fairly efficient market on the national level. Except for

Then it's even easier to move. If the polity doesn't want to zone for more housing, they've chosen to expel people who can't pay more than $X for rent. They'll feel the pain when there's no one around to make

Suppliers will build more until the market clears. If prices are rising, that's a signal to suppliers to keep building. They won't stop until prices fall.

I have little sympathy for people that are "forced" to sell their homes for a large capital gain. They can move to where it's cheap and live large. Maybe my perspective as an immigrant is unusual, but I'm a big fan of

> more luxury housing can make an area more desirable Depends how big the "area" is that you're thinking about. The effect of increasing housing supply is well-studied. Demand can only grow as fast as the population does

The taxi drivers have Square. They just choose not to use it to avoid the processing fee. Also, cash payers are more likely to round up for a tip.

> incentivizing developers to build affordable housing But that's unnecessary. If developers build more luxury housing, that'll reduce the price of existing housing, such that it becomes affordable.

In some countries, taxis are so often criminal that tourists are warned to avoid them. In some less extreme places, drivers simply never use the meter and the passengers must negotiate every ride. Uber and its competitors have been wonder

Yeah, my company paid the premium for car service because taxi dispatch was too unreliable.

Indeed. I wish we had more data to analyze good ways to survive this crisis. Sadly, the predominant result seems to be reversion to dictatorship.

If I recall, this was announced at a Meetup event. Halfway through, amidst the giggles, there was an awkward moment when the hosts realized some of the audience thought it was a real service.

You could have asked for benchmarks without saying, "Yaaawn." I think the author would be more likely to volunteer to improve the code if it were encouraged rather than yawned at.

Roommates in a bigger apartment or house is quite reasonable. 1-bedroom apartments are more than half the price of 2-bedroom apartments, so some efficiencies can be had by sharing a kitchen.

Slave labor? Surely the ratio of Chinese laborers who feel enslaved is low enough that it's inappropriate to describe Chinese labor on the whole as slave labor.

I suspect humans are far more malleable than they realize, and personalities change quickly with different contexts. For example, I am sure many Ukrainians who are now enlisting would have said they'd never kill another human.
