I went on a cruise through Quark Expeditions. We saw the Falklands, South Georgia, and Antarctica. Going in Antarctica was what I was most excited about but South Georgia proved to be the surprise favorite of the trip. If you have the time

I had the pleasure to visit South Georgia at the start of the year and it is one of the most wonderful experiences I've ever had. The island is beautiful and just teeming with life. There has been a tremendous effort to help the ecosys

My old cat was obsessed with margaritas. It made zero sense. One time I caught him licking a counter that I had just sprayed with a bitter lime deterrent. Cats are weird.

Interesting. On the rare occasion that I use a q-tip I've noticed my kitten would aggressively fish them out of the trash and chew on them. I always figured that they were just fun to bat around. This explains a lot.

A question I've never found a good answer to for columnar query engines is how to handle indexing. For queries with very high selectivity it seems like any gains from increased cache-friendliness or SIMD would be erased by still needi

There was a fantastic post on this subject by an architect in the Los Angeles subreddit last year. The general gist is that building requirements (parking in particular) make anything other than luxury condos financially infeasible. https:

Well yeah, that's the expression problem[0]. With OOP I can add a new datatype easily, but when I want to extend the behavior of that type I now need to go to M different places. With a functional style I only need to do one. You'

Seconded. I really miss my Band 2. The whole UI was incredibly well designed for the form factor. The app design guide was a very good read. I also liked how it wasn't trying to pretend to be a normal watch but with a screen. I dabbled

I'd be curious to hear more about your experience doing this. What hosting provider do you use? Most of the major ones don't seem particularly BSD-friendly. I've always been tempted to try running my website off a dragonfly i

The KLEE project[1] does something similar for general code, with symbolic variables. [1] http://klee.github.io

My dream for something like this is having everything on one card would let you manage the complexity a lot better. Having one single interface to pay all bills and see spending breakdowns aggregated across all your cards, recommending the

I actually built a prototype multiparadigm programming language for a class Alex taught using Ohm: http://chimera.kaseyc.com It's a great tool.

My understanding from my algorithms class is that it is simply a matter of choosing your abstraction. Big O is meant to provide a general framework for qualifying and comparing algorithms free of machine dependent factors like execution tim

From industry people I've talked to, browser/rendering engine teams have had success with and like ex game-engine developers, since the fields have a number of similar requirements.

As far as I know, there are no plans to replace Gecko, though they may pull in parts or ideas from Servo. Servo is still primarily a research project into parallelizing a web browser.

You should still be able to use phantom types with empty traits or enums. Here's an article[0] (admittedly from ~6 months ago), about using phantom types in Servo. [0] https://blog.mozilla.org/research/2014/06

Yeah, I know I would want the rules explained to me. Personally, I think that it is a positive that an interviewer doesn't assume any extraneous knowledge on the candidate's part, since it prevents the candidate being in a positio
