Sure it's a great idea and hiring culture would be so much better if it happened, but I think the parent is correct that companies want friction at that point. None of them want to make it easier for talent to jump ship and transfer.

There are technical and political reasons. Among the technical were that Atom was the first app built on the Electron framework. On the political side, I think a significant reason was the fact that Microsoft bought GitHub.

I had this exact same problem when making the switch from VS Code to VSCodium this past week. It would be nice if the same extensions matched.

And we can see this across all levels of society, from cryptocurrency to grade inflation to George Floyd to political corruption to school shootings. The loss of trust in institutions is particularly accelerated today, whereas people of the

I know loads of SWEs who dropped out of CS degrees outright or changed majors and graduated with a liberal arts degree (I myself am a SWE but a liberal arts grad; I never took a single CS course but worked as a sysadmin for the I/O dep

Yep, the last Windows version I used was Win2K. It was my fave version of Windows by far. After that I switched to Linux on the desktop, warts and all.

Cover and book jacket art was better for all books, because what happened is that (especially in the US) instead of letting art directors have creative freedom, they started focus grouping it relentlessly. This, unsurprisingly, creates blan

The Black Keys talked about this on Joe Rogan's podcast. Pat Carney, the drummer, calls it "the guy with a degree from Pepperdine who wants to tweak the high hat."

I liked the movie, but Adams wasn't around to prevent the filmmakers from Americanising it, casting Ford Prefect and Trillian with American actors. If I remember correctly, Trillian is supposed to be Arabic in the book.

Nowhere was the claim made that an Oxford degree makes you intelligent or competent. And in this thread, we're not dealing with the way things should be, however you or I see things. It's simply acknowledging the way things are

It's not mythical, it's very real. Look at the constitution and educational credentials of UK cabinet ministers and Parliament. It's often Eton > Oxford U. In order of prestige, it's undeniably Oxford, Cambridge, and

For some reason Oxford is taken to be the pinnacle of UK Ivory Towers Because it's the most prestigious and the most-well connected (i.e. the most highly prized network) university in the UK.

Loads of people said that about Twitter in 2006 when it was a "knock off." It's been proven wrong again and again. And Musk is the kind of guy who can create significantly large network effects and economies of scale.
