Wow, that's cool. I've admired her for a long time (I'm a long distance hiker). One of the things I like about her is that she proves that you don't need to be in top physical condition or have a lot of expensive gear to

For me, it was AltaVista. When Google came out, it was simply mind-blowing how much better it was and I switched immediately.

It's not so much COVID, it's that essentially what has happened is that the cheap VC investment and loan money dried up, as did the high valuations. That's the simple explanation.

I'm curious about how you found this thread. HN is a pretty niche site.

Grandma Gatewood is a legend on the A.T. She is a great example for female long-distance hikers who wonder if the A.T. is safe. At the time she completed her thru-hike, the A.T. was a lot wilder and more dangerous than it is now. And her ba

Keurig is really terrible, like the fast-food version of coffee. But I don't really like electric kettles. Sure, they let you control the temperature a bit better, but you can do it with traditional kettle over a gas stove if you add a

That's why I wish HN had a native dark mode. I find myself getting away from browser extensions. I used to have a lot of them (uBlock Origin and all the usual suspects), but last year I switched to Brave and I don't have any exten

Pocari Sweat is also hugely popular here in SE Asia. However, it's usually recommended by doctors to rectify dehydration. I agree with the other commenter in the thread who says it's really not meant to be a daily hydration drink,

Laugh away, but Old Twitter was run by some pretty scummy people who allowed the FBI and CIA to backdoor the service. It was also a lot slower and broken compared to how fast it is now, especially outside North America (they recently added

The difference is that Twitter is better than it's ever been now, while Facebook and Airbnb continue to deteriorate.

This isn't a bad piece but the "demise of Twitter" stuff is laughably incorrect and sounds like Spaceman Bad brainworms.

Not just one day a week. A lot of churches open to homeless all during the week. It makes sense because it's a waste of resources to let a large heated building sit empty the other 6 days of the week that aren't Sunday when they c

Great question. If you were an American kid growing up in the US in the 1970's and '80's, football was considered an exotic import (unlike American college and NFL "football"). Youth leagues were a completely new th

Yeah, a lot of review inflation in the US. I see loads of 4-star reviews on Goodreads as well as the restaurant review apps. I wish people would use the entire range as it makes the review more valuable.
