In general, you can use explicit argument passing or closing over what you need . I tend to use closures to get information from my current scope to a callback, although that doesn't always work in heavily object-oriented code.

WebSQLDB isn't really a "standard". The standard is "whatever version of sqlite safari happened to ship with" which is really not a tenable long-term solution.

That's actually not at all what Majd is saying. He's saying that a few good answers with a large community is better than dozens of one-off weekend projects that siphon energy from application developers and open source contributors.

FWIW, I think Backbone is an example of a library that does things right: it's well-maintained, has an awesome community, and a whole ecosystem of plugins and extensions around it. It's the Backbone copycats that drive me crazy.

It's a developer preview. I've seen people around here talking about dumping IE entirely if a sufficiently small number of their users used IE8. How is this different?

Nah. I think Majd was just saying that we've been thinking about a lot of the problems for a while.

I'd be interested to see how a better-implemented, properly optimized pure-Ruby version would perform.

Why do you want Module#mix in favor of Module#prepend. The former introduces a whole new system for mixins alongside the old one, while the latter simply makes the existing system work for extending existing classes (a first-class, no cavea

José Valim has written a book[1] that shows how to swap in all manner of functionality into Rails 3. It covers alternate renderers (PDF), alternate models, alternate template stores (SQL), custom template engines, using the built-in notific

It appears as though the purpose of CSSLint is to promote the ideas of OOCSS, without the bother of defending OOCSS.

HFCS and regular sugar have a very similar proportion of glucose:fructose. The kind of HFCS used in soft drinks is 55% fructose and 42% glucose, while sucrose (sugar) is 50% fructose and 50% glucose. The kind of HFCS used in baked products

The problem with HFCS is not its biological impact. It's the economic impact. By heavily subsidizing corn, we have made sugar (via HFCS) incredibly cheap, which makes it easy to use as an additive.

YARV was an external fork that was integrated into MRI pretty early, and then worked on by the core team for several years. My point was simply that YARV's existence and the commitment of the core team to get it into core (and the resulting

It would also be relatively trivial to convert a Rails app in the first week of development into a Sinatra app, or even a statically generated HTML app. Says nothing about whether it's a very good idea.
