Seriously, comparing my OP-1 ($1400, made in china, buggy, bad QC, small and simple hardware) with my Analog Rytm mkII ($1700, made in sweden, reliable, impeccable QC, larger and much more complex hardware) - the margins on these TE gizmos

Also, intelligence maybe lets you pick out a pareto isosurface in job-space, of which money is only one dimension. At higher isosurfaces, the relative value of money shrinks, because material needs are met, because of the sublinearity of ut

Worth noting that US homicide is highly localized. Certain cities/regions represent a vastly disproportionate fraction.

I can think of a lot of (historically) recent changes in the American environment that are more alienating than cars.

America has had a robust car culture for over 80 years. The obsession over safety is more recent. Stop trying to make everything about cars.

Apple also uses non-standard HEIF tags to allow for HDR photo display of photos taken by Apple devices. Last time I checked, you couldn't (easily) take a photo from a dedicated camera (which has more than enough dynamic range to justi

Sort of - (I assume for PR/marketing reasons) Apple doesn't let apps get access to actual raw sensor data. It may be possible to skip the steps that are causing the most trouble here.

I think it could absolutely make images better on average, assuming their prior is at all representative. The question, though, is whether the expected benefit to the photographer in cases where it improves the image (usually somewhat small

Yes, I meant to imply that dedicated cameras are committing the same "sin" here. I only meant physical IS is better because you don't need to do things like periodically read out the sensor. You are getting a true full-durati

Agreed, Apple is really pushing consumer display technology. It's tough to find FALD 1600 nit displays outside of the XDR or the MBP. Apple has also done a lot for consumer color science. However, as far as the iPhone producing HDR HEI

OK, how about this - your employer has to pay you for the commute you would have on the closest possible housing option to your employer at the time you sign your contract. You'd probably average a whole extra 3 minutes of pay every da

Mandatory commute (e.g. from site entrance to site) is considered work time. Commute you inflict on yourself by choosing to live elsewhere is not.

For most of the people on this site that is probably not very significant in percentage terms, and even in absolute terms is probably easily outweighed by the cost savings associated with WFH.

For chains of function applications, `$` is more readable than like 5 nested parens, especially if the thing at the end of your `f $ g $ ...` is a do-block, which will span multiple lines.

No, eliminating the photon count filter would just make your vision look noisy/staticky in dark conditions. Most of the effects of LSD (patterns etc) are actually pretty well understood. It's probably caused by a stable geometric
